I concur with the few people on here! You'd be better off joining the TA or Auggies coz UAS is a glorified drinking club for wannabe ruperts! (been there, binned that!)

Not sure - all my stats are well out of date!

And finally, when you first go to the afco will you be tested on anything?

Not really, the first visit just explains the routes and options, they also give you a quick once over - to see if your rupert material. They'll then invite you back to watch a video/DVD, and for some really basic tests.

I can't comment on what it's like (I did the TA thing). However, UAS typically has a higher pass rate at OASC - especially for pilots.

Sorry to drag up an old post....

Getting into a UAS is quite easy compared to DE. You have to be interviewed at your squadron and then go down to Cranwell to undergo medical and aptitude testing. (This is not the process for bursary) I really enjoyed my time on my UAS and it only made me more determined to join the RAF. You do EFT while doing a degree which is no easy task but quite enjoyable. You make a lot of friends, and yes, you do drink a lot of beer. If you are interested in the RAF, especially as a pilot, and want to go to university then it is ideal. Don't dismiss it until you have looked into it. If you decide against joining a UAS and go to university and then apply to join the RAF you may get asked why you didn't look into it.

When you go to an AFCO for an initial visit it's all unasessed. You'll have time to think about your application, ask as many questions as you want and then attend a presentation. It's only at the interview that you will be tested as it is the start of the process to join the RAF.

As for pass rates at OASC....who knows. I heard they have around 110 places this year for pilot. You're guess is a good as mine as to how many people apply.

From what I have heard only 88 pilot places were being selected for this year, that's what the AFCO have said, but I have heard all sorts of different statistics.

Yeah I heard 88 as a figure once but a good source told me 108. So maybe it's something in between! Can't hurt to assume it's 88 and try your hardest!
