World War One and mutiny...
Always wondered about something..probably best discussed on WW1 websites..but thought you might have some ideas..if subject too sensitive..no problem. Anyway, I am a fan of "Paths of Glory" and have read some about the French Army mutiny..Was there ever anything similar that happened with the British Army ? why or why not ? Were any officers ever court martialed for refusing to send troops into certain death etc..like I said, haven't done a lot of research. My grandfather served there and fought along side British troops. Thanks.

Good question, Larry. Perhaps JR might be able to recall, after all, he was there
By the way, did your Great Grand-paw have a watch? Did he give it to your Grand Daddy in WW11? Did your daddy hide it for four years up his hoop in Vietnam?
Christopher Walken, anyone
Aye,

I arrived there in '74 so as with all good tales this is second hand.
10 Regt RCT was the 'penal' regiment for all of the RCTs nutters, alkies, misfits and na'er do wells. So with a Corps strength of around 12,000 in the early 70's there were many good candidates!
'71 was a particularly busy time for all in NI, so Squadrons were either in NI, training for NI, or just returned from NI, no problem so far. However, the 'management' were especially keen on the philosophy of 'if it doesn't move paint it' school of military doctrine.
This coupled with the fact that 10 Regt RCT were banned from every watering hole in Germany and virtually confined to barracks, tensions were high.
Rather than give the lads wind down time after endless 4 month emergency tours in NI they considered a nice parade for the CO was a good plan. Stones were painted white, leaves swept. Stones were painted blue, leaves swept. Stones were painted yellow, leaves swept.............your getting the picture I trust.
The big parade, drums beating, enough was enough apparently and they all sat down and wouldn't budge - a strike I suppose. Lot's of shouting, names being taken, threats made - nobody moved.
RMP were called, the square was cleared with the use of dogs (no, not WRAC) and all were kept in barracks until reason was restored.
Big inquiry, nobody on the parade was charged, 'management' sacked, new management team in place within days.
The notoriety of 10 Regt lives on to the present day in RCT circles. As a footnote they became BAOR Boxing Champions five years in a row 71 -76 and Army Boxing Champions for four of these five years. Other units who couldn't muster the resources of such a large Corps decided not to enter the competition so the team was disbanded to give everyone else a chance.
An excellent first tour and introduction to the Army

A good dit, and by the sound of things they had some justification.
Royals approach would have been more along the lines of the management leading the festivities at the Magic Stick and last man sober is on a charge.
It seems that some Ruperts are so divorced from the hazards of the job that they cannot begin to understand what the men have to put up with.
