Basic in England.....

Post by Tennant »

Today i was told I'd be doing my basic in Pirbright for the RLC, I was just wondering if there will be any Scttish or other Irish along with me?
The ACO told me i'd be with about 85% English, as i'm from N.Ire would this be a good thing or a bad thing, or would it just not matter?

You could find that some of the men with you come from all over the Country and beyond and from all sorts of backgrounds.

Yea i know that, it's just do you not get an extra hard time for being a Paddy if you were with alot of English guys, or do you think they'd be o.k as long as your sound?

Just crack on with it mate, as long as you dont have a chip on your shoulder about being Irish or not liking us Englanders then you'll be fine.

I like the Irish, you guys make great drinking buddies and always seem to have something funny to say, maybe its the accent.

....and you can do one hundred and one things with a potatoe!!!

Good luck Paddy and like the others have said its what you do in the company of the ones your training with not which part of the globe your from!

I got stick for being a Taff from the rest, a matelot from the bootnecks and a turncoat form the matelots, and as for pongos ....well they just bowed in admiration and awe!!!!

Good luck and give as good as you get unless its the DS ripping into you!

Like all the others said just take it as it comes.

I was the only Taff in my intake and got loads of stick, as long as you take it all in your stride and have a laugh about it you'll be OK.

We had a guy from NI with us and we all took the piss, but in the end everybody knows it's all a piss take.

Christ I remember all the names I was called:

Taff
Blodwen
Chadwel
Welshie
9 Iron (was meant to sound like IEUAN as in Ieuan Evans ex-Welsh rugby player)

P.S. Just remember to take the piss out of them that everybody is beating England in the rugby these days!!!

We have a lad from N.I in my platoon. He gets the usual banter from the staff, including the odd dig in the stomach! But its all harmless and funny for the rest of the platoon. :D
