Overhand bicep curls
Ive been working on my upper body strength a lot more recently recovering from dislocated knee (finally my runnings gone to **** and so has everything) anyway If i was to do a bicep curl with a weight of my own body weight odd would this be about the same as doing a good chinup overhand grasp? Just ive noticed very worrying creaking on my doorframe after 8 chinups

Lat pulldown wont help that much. Friend of mine can do well over his bodywieght on the lat pulldown but he can only do 5 undergrasp pull ups and even less overgrasp ones.
I guess you'll have to just find a tree to do them on.

or you could always put the bar in a different door frame.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming... 'F*ck, what a trip!'

the only real exercise that will help pull-ups is pull-ups. Lat pull down will help because it is an exercise that trains the Latissimus Dorsi (back muscle) which is the main muscle used in pull-ups, and it trains it in the same action. But it won't do in place of it so crouchmasterT is right.
It's a bit like trying to use bench press instead of press ups.
Any back exercise will aid but you'll have to try and find somewhere else to do them - Park climbing frame/monkey bars or even a tree branch.
