Eyesight Standard

Post by james_m »

I guess this has most likely to have been covered many times but I cant seem to find the answer in the search. I was just wondering what the eyesight requirements are to be a pilot?

Also are glasses and/or contact lenses allowed?

Its not for me but a friend who wants to join!

Thanks lads

I went for an RAF medical many moons ago , '88 in fact , I wanted to be aircrew but failed the med as I wear glasses

So tell your "freind" that the answer will be NO

also he shouldn't worry about that other thing , it happens all the time , to most blokes and a bit of cream should clear it up

Alright mate, thanks for the reply!

It was for my friend as I am hoping to join the Royal Marines in a few months. He really want to be a pilot.

Do they not except you if you wear contact lenses?

Thanks again

Well it was a while ago now but I became an "L Mech AD" which breaks down into

L (electronics)

Mech (anic)

A (ir ) D (efence)

Basically big big radars

Tip to anyone though , when I joined there were no vacancys in the trades I wanted , I really wanted to work on plan , avionics etc, but as I'd been left school a while I wanted to get into the services

So , like a fool , rather than wait and join up as a Technician level which is what I passed the tests as, I joined up at the lower level and regret it even now

You will spend a long time in the mob , you dont really want to spend it in the wrong job for 9 years !

when you go to OASC you will have an indepth eye test. You MUST have 6/6 unaided vision. There is a new reg allowing airmen to wear contacts however.

If they require 6/6 unaided why do you need glasses? Do you mean 6/6 aided?

errrm you aren't allowed glasses as a pilot mate. 6/6 req is for them, airmen are allowed glasses/contacts to a certain degree.
