Smoking on subs

Post by feederboy »

I was just wondering whether anyone could tell me what the rules and regs are regarding smoking on submarines. Is it banned outright, or are there just restrictions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

smoking on subs

Post by tn201 »

You can, they have a small usually very cramped room where you can smoke. Last i heard only 2 guys can smoke at the same time to preserve the atmosphere on the boat. The issue is at the CO's discretion. Good way to cut back i suppose.

Guess its not the same as in "The Hunt for Red October" then. The engineer was never seen without one in his mouth! But then he was Russian...

Yes you can smoke on Subs in the Mess not at Scran times though (unless you ask the guys that are in and they all say yes) or when you are on the surface ask the OOW Officer of the Watch if you can go on top of the conning tower for a Smoke & a breath of fresh air

There is no limit on the amount of people who can smoke at any one time

When I visited the HMS Courageous, one of the soap dodgers onboard said that at the moment you can smoke but soon they are going to completely ban it.

I may have misheard but im pretty sure thats what he said.

Don't think they will ban it maybe they were gassing the batterys so he meant as in soon you wont be able to smoke onboard the boat

I'm not sure about what you say jammy about gassing the battery's. but HMS Courageous is a Non-working submarine, it can never go to sea, its in a Dry dock in plymouth. And will be for a long time to come. Its a museum basicly.

Yeah HMS Courageous is a decomisioned sub resting in dry dock at HMS Portland in Plymouth. As Bovie said, its only around so as to give us baby matelots a day out and a bit of an insight into life on a submarine.

I wouldnt be suprised if they were going to ban smoking on subs. Ciggarette smoke probably shortens the life of the air conditioning units onboard asswell as the crews, and the possibilty of submariners suing the navy on the grounds that they were forced to inhale the smoke of others is probably quite large and something that the Navys legal eagles are very well aware off.

As a non-smoker I would like the whole navy to be smoke free. It's a filthy habbit which serves no purpose, except to ruin a healthy body and eat up a persons hard earned cash. It's ashame we have evil corporations like Spa around otherwise we might all be a bit healthier. A Lieutennant commander in the medical branch told us in a lecture that the sickbay at HMS Raleigh tried to step up its efforts to get everybody to stop smoking, but were forced to ease off when the Spa complained to the Commodore. Apparently Spa makes £8 000 000 a year alone from ciggarette sales and were not willing to put peoples health before its own massive profits.

HMS Courageous used to be in 4 Wharf in the Sub Refit Complex i know it's a veg but even though it is on shore supply they have to still gas the batterys.
Shite boats by the way the old V&C Class .
To be honest though i would not go on any of the old ones unles you wish to look like the ready brek
kid all glowing
They should take you on one of the newer hunter killers at Devonport not a shed like Courageous
great draft though don't end up at faslane !! every boat ends up in jockland when you are going or back from a patrol ask for Big Nancy at Imps :drinking:
