Why am I just learning this? Funniest thing I've heard in a while.
There was a history of the S.A.S. documentary on the Discovery channel the other day which I watched to get away from the tennis. These things aren't usually much good, but what made it was the contribution of several former members of the regiment giving first hand account of famous actions(and a tantalising glimpse of some colour film shot on ops from,I think,1972).Among the contributors were Pete Wignall,John McAleese(never off the box!) and Lofty himself.
Anyway Lofty was reminiscing about a time when he was having difficulty persuading a donkey to go uphill.Apparently the stuborn animal was having nothing to do with it a fact made worse by the native supposedly in charge of the beast laughing at Loftys attempts to get it moving. In his anger and frustration lofty "threw a punch into him" (the donkey that is.He didn't specify if he chinned it or otherwise!).
To everyones suprise, not least the donkeys,it went down as if it had been shot.Happily for animal lovers everywhere, and I include me,the donkey struggled to it's feet and carried on.As Lofty recalled the donkey displayed a previously unsuspected enthusiam for going uphill afterwards and the accompanying native kept his mouth shut and his head down.
Should this be included in selection to maintain standards?
"Right before we badge you, you've got to drop a donkey with one punch or you're rtu'd"
