General Technician (Workshops)

I have been asked at the AFCO if I had ever considered Gen Tech, I have read the leaflet and it appeals. Just wondering if there are any Gen Tech's here to tell me more about the job, and the lifestyle as a Gen Tech?

Aerial Erector is being amalgamated into the new TCO trade (along with EL Tech).

We'll always need workshops for Dets, so they'd never disappear entirely.

What's happening to Trade Group 11 then? Are they amalgamating with Trade Group 3 Tech’s?
I'll hang up my morse key then, put my boot polish away and just generally won’t do too much. No more Guard Duties or Ironing my kit !

There was a briefing sheet doing the rounds that described the changes to be implemented.....wish I'd read it properly now!

I'm currently a trainee TCO at Cosford so can give a bit of info on this one. One the 1st of Aprill 2005 Trade Groups 11 (TCO), 3 (El Tech), and 5 (Ariel Erector) are emalgamating into trade group 4. This trade group is concerned with the installation, operating, maintaining, and engineering of Communication Information Systems (CIS) and telecommunications.

My trade will be changing to CIS Operator Maintainer, as there is now a more technical side to the TCO trade, but as to how the El Techs and riggers will fit in I don't have a clue

It’s good to see its changing and actually crediting the Ops with actually being able to change a fuse etc. In the blue side of the RAF, you won’t be able to do much more than change the paper on a fax machine in the current TG 11 format.
I was fortunate to spend most of my time on TCW, so when you are in the field you would end up doing the tech's job - setting up Satellites transceivers and he would do yours - radio checks etc. On some dets you are on your own and have to fend for your self and fix your own kit.
I pvr'ed a few years ago because I found it extremely frustrating not be allowed get involved in the more technical side of things because I was an Op. So I did a lot of Data Networking course's in my spare time, came out and doubled my wages overnight and have gone on
from there.
Get yourself on TCW, different world to sitting in a Commcen making the Sgt. a brew every hour and sorting out your secondary duties. Best of luck with the rest of your trade course.
