I tried searching for this but couldn't find whati wanted to know. When do you actually start getting paid? A month after you start the 32 weeks or when you pass out or what???

As far as I know you start getting paid from the moment you attest. Pay also goes up after week 15/16 as well I think.

If you weren't paid during training there would be a lot of very skint nods at Lympstone.

You start getting paid right from the start. However as you will have to buy lots of kit out of your own pocket, they will give you a cash advance of something like £30-50 in the first week which you must take and then offer you a further optional cash advance of something like £100. They will then deduct the amount borrowed in smaller chunks out of your monthly pay.

What sort of kit are you likely to need to go out and buy? I would rather get this sorted now while I am still on a decent salary.

Also, what gear do you wish you brought with you that would have made foundation easier?

2 x waterproof torches with spare batteries (i.e. Mag-lite) lense covered with black masking tape with a single pin prick in centre to give off minimal light
2 x cheap gas lighters
Plenty of trouser twists (for your CS95 bottoms)
Bucket for your washing
Re-sealable water-proof plastic bags (to individually waterproof your kit)
Personal first aid kit
30 metres of thin para-cord or comms-cord inc something like a H shape plastic fishing thingy to wrap the cord around nicely (better than a stick)
Couple of bunges (to attach role-mat to bergan)
Waterproof notebooks and cover
Map cover
Lanyards (could use string)

Most of this equipment can be bought from the Naffi and the UIF shop. However I would get it all up-front as it will save you all the messing around. Obviously get the bucket from the Naffi due to its size.

Why don't they supply this stuff? You get paid a pittence as it is without having to provide your own gear.

Out of interest, what is the Para Cord for?

Yes it is well out of order that we need to buy things like torches; bungees and paracord. By the way, the latter is extremely tough 'string' that is used for putting up your shelter.

the stuff you've listed, is that needed from day 1? will it be frowned apon if you bring it with you? i ask this as i work in a outdoor shop so i get it all dirt cheap.

You will find any arm of thearmed forces will give you a shopping list of expected additional items

not sure why you want elastics for C95 trousers though they come with a nice bit of string attached , maybe its a booty thing

the majority of that stuff is going to get lost or stolen and maybe thats why they dont issue it

Lets face it Centurian never get the pay right anyway. We have been transferred to HMS Nelson because we are overseas and that is just as bad we have been out here for 3 months now and still not recieved a wage slip. We have also found out that we havent been paid LSSA and also they have not taken out housing fuel and they have the cheek to tell us to sort out our admin.
