Medical Questions

Post by Fenrir »

Hey folks,

I'm looking to be joining the TA this summer, after all my exams are out of the way. I have some concerns though... I am a hayfever sufferer. I do know people in the TA who suffer from hayfever, and so this reassures me a little. How strict are they on hayfever, and to what extent do they check this?

Also, I used to have a wheeze due to my hayfever and was prescribed an inhaler. I've been clear for 4 years now, not needing to use my inhaler. Will they want proof of that? In what form?

Cheers in advance.

Fenrir.

As long as you're four years clear you shouldn't have any troubles.

I've got hayfever but not bad enough for an inhaler, just got used to itchy eyes and snot everywhere. The MO can prescribe tablets which saves you a fortune.

Aye, I'll check with the unit.

I also need to check with the doctor that it definately has been four years - i.e. get the dates so that i dont make a fool of myself on the application if I'm wrong.

Cheers mateys.

Hayfever is not a bar to service in the TA.

In the Regular Army this could pose a problem when you think of some of the areas they expect you to serve.

I suffer from a whole range of allergies, inc. hayfever and one anti-hystamine pill and a nasal spray do the biz for me. Whenever we were in the field (Germany or UK) this stuff would go in my survival kit on my webbing.

Well mate you might just be out in the field for weeks on end, what would you do then ask for an air drop?

No, like a good squaddie, I carried ample supplies with me. Having been in the field for weeks on numerous occasions (1988 on exercise or support ops for more than 6 months of the year) I had the stuff with me. It's not difficult to be prepared when you know what the score is.

Read the posts carefully and you'll find I answered a query by someone wanting to join the TA.
As someone asked a reasonable question I gave a reasonable answer from my experience - when a unit is in the field they have an A2 echelon, REMFs - included in that is the medical section which has a link to Rear echelon - ie barracks or peacetime location. If the medics don't carry the full medication they know a person who does - hence no real need for an air drop!
