I asked an ex para once and he told me milling is just plain aggression whereas boxing takes skill.

Milling you have 1 minute to beat as much blood and snot out of your opponent (someone of a similar size and weight). You must show sufficient controlled agression and if you go down you must get up again otherwise they make you do it again. You aren't allowed to dodge or duck coz you have to take the punches and give em back!

Hope this helps

like then man said, its not controlled agression, think its something todo with showing you can control your agression under a situation.

The only comparison between boxing and milling is they both have gloves on.

Milling is one minute of toe to toe, you and your opponent, showing controlled aggression. Controlled aggression in this case means throwing left and right haymakers at a similar sized opponent (weight wise) without the drama queen growls or bruce lee 'aah so' noises. you either win or draw, but losing can still 'get you the points' if its a good scrap. head guards are worn and the gloves are 16oz which I think are heavier than standard - just enough to completely knacker you out. I enjoyed my milling event - even though I bloody lost! But I bloodied his nose and knocked him down once..... shame he knocked me down 3!!

Milling is one round and will go on as long the instructors think necessary.
What they are looking for is your will to win, if you can't win your ability to keep trying to win regardless of any punishment that you are taking. It is all that spirit that resides in certain men that does not know when they are beaten and keeps them fighting. That is wthey are looking for.
