I'm hoping to join the RN as a CT(communications technician) and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this job? All I know about it is the info I got from the RN website - which isn't really a lot

I was wondering if once I left the navy, what job prospects I would have from qualifying to this position and also, what the job itself actually entails.

You would be in line for employment as an interpreter. You will require good language skills both English and Foreign. Quite difficult to get into and with a long waiting list. You will be qualified to work for intelligence units should it be required or wished.
Most CT's leave to work for governments and or the UN if they continue with their trade.
Good Money There!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going in as an OM(C) submainer next month.
I don't suppose you know what types of work it could lead onto in civilian life?
Although OM(C) isn't as specialised, do you think there are similar opportunities as for former CTs? Such as working for the UN.

One of the main reasons I chose to go into comms is that I thought it would give me good experience/qualifications for civilian life afterwards. Do you think this is true? Could it lead onto a career in telecoms?

I'd apreciate any feedback, cheers...

chris,

i'm not too sure of what qualifications an OM gets but as an OM(C) its not going to be much. if its a career in telcomms you're after you'd be better going for tiff or ct. the raf have telecomms trades as they maintain the raf telephone network, mabay the rn om(c)'s do as well for the navy - dunno.

as for un work it depends how long you do, the higher the rank you get the more experience and therefore the more employable you become.

as for a career in telecomms i wouldn't bother, it's on its ar*e and unlikely to ever regain the heights it once had. i work in telecomms (computer telephony integration) and there's next to no work available and what there is is paying 30 - 40% less than a few years ago. its all moving to the pacific rim.

if you want my advice, distance study for a degree/HND whilst your in the mob - ex forces and a decent qualification can work wonders outside.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO JOIN THE NAVY THEN JOIN AS AN OM(C). THEY ARE IN FACT MORE SPECIALISED THAN ANY OTHER OM GROUP. aS FOR QUALS. THEY ARE PRETTY BASIC AND (NOT TO DETRACT FROM THE QUALITY OF THE LADS WHO ARE IN) NOT WORTH THE PAPER THEY ARE PRINTED ON. MOST OF THE WORK WILL EQUATE TO AN NVQ AND THAT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF ABOUT 1.5 GCSE'S APPARENTLY.
aS GASH AHND SAID IF YOU ARE GOING TO JOIN WITH A VIEW TO A CIVILIAN CAREER LATER TIFF (THEY ARE GETTING BASIC DEGREES NOW) OR CT (EXCELLENT LANGUAGE COURSES).
AS FOR UN WORK MATE, AS A SUN DODGER YOU WILL BE LUCKY TO SEE THE OUTSIDE OF FASLANE OR PLYMOUTH IN YOUR CAREER. THEY ARE SO SHORT OF SUBMARINERS THAT YOU WOULD NEED A MIRACLE TO GET TO WORK WITH THE UN UNLESS ON "PEACEKEEPING" OPS AND EVEN THEN YOU PROBABLY WONT KNOW ABOUT IT UNTIL THE BBC TELLS YOU. IF YOU WANT ANY MORE INFO YOU CAN GET MY DETAILS OFF THE SITE.

GOOD LUCK!
