WHAT'S WITH YOUR MESSED UP PRESSUPS?!
Firstly, marines' pressups are so damn hard! I can only do a couple at a time, i was doing ok with my pressups, now i have to start from sqaure one!!! I need clarification and justification!, I only know of royal presssups the bits of info i've picked up on other posts, please someone give me a full and proper account of how to do them eg. are the arms allowed to come out from the body at all, cause i can hardly keep them in!

Those aren't just royal push ups, they are 'Infantry School' push ups and you will be doing lots of them. I don't know if the P Coy push ups are different than the ones I had to do on my jump course but these are also alot harder and really get you in shape and hurting fast.
Take a ball, a soccer ball will do and place it under your pecs, then grasp the ball and use that for push ups. It works better with a helmet cause they don't move around and do 10 everytime you enter and exit your room with it in there. You will either begin avoiding your room or get into hella good shape.

If a man has nothing he is willing to die for then he isn't fit to live.
This is going to sound stupid.
A good way to work your triceps and biceps, for the press up, is to buy a gym ball thingy. (Its a big, inflatable and lightweight ball, like a big balloon - just go to a sports shop and look on the packets, i've also seen them in Next among the presents). What you do is get a bench to support your feet and take up the press up position, with your hands pressing down on the ball. This is tricky and hardwork, but you just basically hold the position and you should feel the muscles in agony. You know when your not doing it right when the ball slips away and you land on the floor face first.

Train for the event lads, don't waste your time with mincey beach balls, you don't use them in training/the Corps s why waste your time practising things that may be building the wrong muscles.

Sorry to be pedantic but press ups wont train the biceps. In order for your training to be balance you need to work both sides of the limb e.g. biceps and triceps, hence why those bar pull up things (not the chins, altho they do work the bi's) to even things out, otherwise u risk muscular imbalances and consequent injuries.
The press ups use the triceps and the pecs. There are many different exercises which use these. Check out www.brianmac.demon.co.uk
The best exercise is simply push ups - give you experience and develop the right muscles. Just make sure you do them correctly. IF you find them too hard or get tired, do modified press ups (kneeling).
Use a bench press machine. Dumbells are also useful.
You will have to do other exercises for your biceps - pull ups, bent arm hang, arm curls, etc.
The beach ball thingy is best to use during circuit training.

I went on my first TA weekend the other week and the press ups your talking about sounds the same as the press-ups we had to do!!! Unless I’m very much mistaken there isn’t any difference between the army and marine style of press-ups...

During Taekwondo training, we do them on our knuckles. Not to show off or to say 'I'm hard' and such crap, but for conditioning the fore-fist and strengthening the wrists.
Also, you get a little more range of motion on the pecs during the downward phase, which is all good

Civvie style press-ups (The wrong way!) are done with elbows out....

There loads of variations, but only one is right for Royal
