Regiments

Post by Aussie »

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. Do you have to choose which (infantry) regiment you wish to join before you do basic training?
I'm thinking about either the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders or maybe the Dukes ( was also keen on the Coldstream Guards at one stage but im not really into the cerimonial stuff ). I'm Australian so I don't really have any regional affiliations.

Another thing, with the exception of line battalions in 16 Air Assult Brigade, do the infantry get much chance for action? i don't see why the para's and marines should be getting all the action

My coach at rugby recently joined the Irish guard, (he’s Australian) he got to choose which regt me wanted to go into, not sure about your other question you’d need to speak to someone a little more clued up on the military

Thanks. I've heard there's a lot of Commonwealths in the Black Watch. The Dukes say on there website that they have a few too.

Right now I'm tossing up between the infantry & the Royal Armoured Corps. I'd really like both. Do RAC get much action ?

Several reasons. The main one being that the entry standards are different. One reason is that in school I HATED maths, and never passed it. Even though every year I'd say "right, this year I'm gonna put the effort in and pass maths ", my hatred and boredom of the subject always got the better of me. I don't have a learning diability, i just dislike schoolwork.

The point is, the Australian Army want Year 10 passes in Maths and English for entry at any level, any job. English is Ok, but my maths was shit. I've e-mailed them but they won't be swayed. They want Year 10 maths.

The British Army, however, requires no formal academic qualifications because there entry test tests you on what you NEED to do the job, none of this useless algebra/equations shit. It's far more practical.

Secondly, the Britsh Army offers far more oppurtunitits for travel and operational deployments ( athough the Aussie Army's getting better ). John Howards the best thing to happen to the Oz military in ages, and East Timor and the War on Terror really woke us up. But it will take a long time to fix what those post-Vietnam pansy governments did to the army, with all there budget and manpower cuts and there virtual ban on overseas deployments.

Well thats my bitch session for the day 8) I still love the Aussie Army, and consider it "my" army, I just think that I would personally more happy in the Britsh Army.

The problem with joining the British Army is you'll have to live in Britain.

My appologies for bad wording. What I meant was after you join the British Army you have to live here. :)

Fair enough Aussie, I thought it was passes in year 9 maths and english, for certain jobs, things may have changed in the last few years. Anyway, good luck for the your future in the Brit Army i'm sure you'll have a good time there, there are plenty of Aussies and sheep shagging Kiwis serving with them.

Cheers. :drinking:
