Heavy weapons - anti tank

Post by Jonny »

How long is the training for the basic course in heavy weapons anti tank? I think its refered to as HW3. Could anyone tell me a bit more about what this specialisation involves other than carring more weight on your back!
Thanks.

I can't help you with those details, but when I was at PRMC our corporal was a HW-AT guy and said that they were soon getting these ( http://www.army-technology.com/projects/gill/ ) new ATGMs. 4000m range and the ability to fire from cover and guide to target using the IR camera in the seeker head. Very impressive.

Thanks Gipper, I think you might have been on the same PRMC (course 188 in feb) and I got the same info on heavy weapons as you did. Hopefully someone may be able to expand on the training side.

Do I smell a "Rat" or is it a fishing line, baited and weighted with an
81 mm Mortar Bomb!!!
If it is a kosher question then I would need to know a little more before before divulging such information and then in true Bootneck style I may have to kill you.

Sorry but I did not think my question would cause any problems. I start recruit training in just over 2 weeks and was thinking about specialisations as i might be asked when im their. How long is the training for the basic course in heavy weapons anti tank.? I realise getting through training is the first thing but why not think ahead? So is the course something i could do straight away or is several years service required?

HW3

When I did it, it was about 4 weeks I think. You can finish training, go to your unit and end up back at Lympstone in a few weeks again to do your 3's course. At the end of the day its heavy but you get a BV in Norway sometimes, the rest of the time you pulk it. I enjoyed it.

Sorry Johny but with the little information given I was a little sceptical.
Prior to leaving the corps 5 years ago the HW3 A/Tk course was three weeks long and held at CTC. Not only do you get to carry heavy weights but you learn AFV (Armoured Fighting Vehicle) recognition and recognition of AFV's using thermal imaging. The instructors teach you the system inside out,how to deploy it and of course how to fire and maintain it but best of all you get two further weekends, three weeks, a joining run and a leaving run on the sunny south coast so take your cheque book it will be expensive.
As Barry says you do occasionaly get he use of a vehicle but don't be surprised if you end up manpacking or pulking. For years I told the powers that be that it isn't practical but every 2 years as the bosses changed we re-invented the wheel.
Hope you achieve you goals and above all keep a PMA (positive Mental Atitude)
