My trip to OASC is 4 weeks away:O!

Post by The Stig »

well it doesnt seem to long ago since i got the letter inviting me up to OASC but its almost hear (23rd sept.)!

I thought id post some websites which i have used to help me practise Speed/Distance/Time stuff and basic maths stuff which is crucial to have!

http://www.blackdog.net/games/math/ - use the "maths cards" they are random generated questions for addition division subtraction etc. and very useful!

http://www.speeddistancetime.info/ - much like the name suggests it helps you out with S/D/T and has a random question generator test aswell:D

http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=501724 - S/D/T for dummies is the title but very useful methods for answering SOME questions but not really useful for more difficult ones!

hope this helps some people and i'll leave a post about how i got on at Cranwell:D

If you have any questions about the training, just ask - always happy to help potential colleagues!

Or you can have freedom.

I don't think you have to be brilliant at maths on the aptitude tests. There's one where you have to do sums as fast as you can while you memorise random strings of numbers and re-enter them (or something like that...) and they get a bit harder as you go along, but don't recall having to do speed/time/distance type ones.
There were a couple of guys on my course who really struggled with the maths during the course, (they must have passed the aptitude tests even so!)but you do plenty of it, and if you're not too long out of the education system you'll probably find it easier. Afraid you will have to pass exams during 2 of the courses though! (And you're not allowed a calculator... I suggest learning your 13 times table, you'll find out why when you get flying!)

The problem solving and leadership/teamwork exercises are probably more important, and you can use them to show yourself to good advantage. Remember if someone else is leading, you can help them out if they need it, but don't be pushy.

cheers for the advice! as ive discovered during my application for the RAF...they always make things sound worse then what they will actually be! my formal interview for example! obviously i will put lots of effort into my prep for OASC but it might not be as bad as i think it will be :D

Obviously you'll have been reading up on what aircraft we have, and what's coming in in the future (Or is at least supposed to be!), and you've been keeping up with current affairs both domestic and international, so the best advice I can give you about the whole thing is to just relax and enjoy it. Get yourself down to the bar in the evenings and have a drink with some of the other candidates, it really helps.
(Don't go too mad though, sure a hangover would be counter productive!)
The people on my OASC that went through were mostly the ones who'd been playing Jenga in the bar, and not the ones who'd holed themselves up in a corner with a spotter's guide to RAF aircraft!

once more cheers for the adivice! i know what you mean about going to the mess every night and socialising with ur candidates! my grandad who came out of the RAF in '91 was a warrant officer in charge of finalising people suitable for commision in his branch, and one thing he told me he had to mention was whether or not the person was "a loner" or down the mess alot or families club....so i'll deffo spend most of my free time there in the mess or chatting to all the candidates on my course:D and i'll let u know how i got on:D

Hi Stig,

How did your OASC go? I am going on the 12th October, wondering if you have any good advice!

If I remember rightly you are going for WSOp aren't you?

hi mate! unfortunatly i got chopped after the aptitude tests! lol im now reapplying for ASO or ATC in the airmen trades!

advice for OASC...well what branch are u going for?

> be yourself is the best one! when ur in the mess and people are telling jokes for example feel free to laugh at them dont ignore them because you think it would look bad if your seen having fun lol

>playing jenga in the mess with other candidates is better then sitting on your own reading a book about RAF aircraft!

> use those websites i pasted in the first post....they help your "numerical reasoning" for the aptitude e.g. the 120 maths questions in 2 mins has similar type questions!

as soon as i find out what branch your going for i can give you more advice!

Take lots of PE kit to go underneath your green coveralls as you spend most of your time in them, including your interview.

Be confident and a team player during leadership exercises.

yer dont take lots of suits lol you wear one there...then the apititude is "smart casual" so you dont need to wear a tie...then like dave281082 say's your interview medical etc. is done in the "sexy" OASC green overalls lol
