Irish vote on Lisbon treaty lost
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7452171.stm
The Irish government were the only European state to have a vote on the lisbon treaty and they have lost it. Looks like it doesnt matter if Brown has a referendum now.

Well Brown and his cohorts might view it as "lost" . But most view it simply for what it is, a "no" to the Lisbon treaty!
Well, thank God for that. And thank you Ireland. This Lisbon treaty takes far too many powers away from member states and would override national legislation in favour of EU legislation on a number of issues. The Swedes would have voted no to it as well, but our right wing govt was too afraid to give the people a referendum because they knew they'd get a "no" vote.
I've been following this closely and Ireland was the only country that went to referendum on this. There are still far too many vital points of the treaty that need to be clarified.

Don't get carried away by the Irish vote.Brussels will win in the end,it always does. The treaty will be brought in bit by bit,in fact, some of it already has been implemented. All other member countries were told today,to ratify the treaty in their own governments.Like I said, the bastards never give in.

Agreed - Well done Ireland - no yoke
But I also agree that a steamroller effect will be brought in, then we can
see what the vote of the individual stands for within the EU.
Think if all countries decided on holding a referendum - and that
Government again had to do as they were told !
The Irish decision has no doubt strengthened the Norwegian standpoint.
I watched in amazement here as the EU spokesman advocated the
member states to continue as if nothing had happened -
the gall of the man ! -
I remember seeing in '72 the plans for the division of the oil and fisheries
to the benefit of the 'entire community'( the Norwegian oil and fish that is)
Spain, Portugal and Germany came out quite well
As for Sweden's membership - I look forward to the discussions on the
joint defence agreement between Norway and Sweden as suggested last
week.... the irony is feelable. Sweden being a member of the EU.....
The current Government will no doubt continue to clothe themselves in
green in order to 'court' us into accepting even more legislation from the
EU..... they will not succeed - unless they decide to refuse a referendum
because the 'majority' have voted them into power - therefore 'they'
should be able to decide without conferring with the populace !

It may be a no vote but is any one going to pay any heed to it or are they going to just go ahead with the dam treaty. Now once they have cut back on the EU funding that goes to Ireland some thing £3 million per day which works out at about pound per person per day. Now once the aid has been cut back and Ireland begins to hurt and they ask them again what do you think the answer will be ???????

This is not the first attemp at European Unity. The other attempts also
failed.....
Germany could not support the entire population when East Germany
was "freed"....
Belgium has always been too small, Portugal has no resources,
(canny port mind) Spain is all plastic tents for tomatoes and barren fishing
grounds -
No - Britain is better off with Scotlands oil and the tourist trade....
Blackpool rock and fish and chips.....
The Italian attempt, with Julius Cæsar, the French with William the
Conkerer, French again with Bonaparte, the Germans with that Austrian
fella - they ALL tried for the Union of Europe in one way or another -
all failed. All that has been produced is a mass of bureaucrats who
migrate from office to office and 'network' - a bit like sparrows.
I agree with Tab - let's see what happens when the vote is again given to
our Irish cousins - because, after all, they did not understand what they
were voting on - as the man in Brussels says ! (!) (!)
BUT - where is the 3 million quid a day coming from Tab ?
Sounds like a pyramid to me .... are they legal ?
The Irish vote strengthened the "No" organisation by many percent !
The "No" side now number about 54% - the "Yes" side are at 38% at the
last postings..... That is as in - "No way José" (this in Norway of course)
The Irish vote made ME feel good - Perhaps they will be allowed to leave
the class.....

Pilgrim Norway.......The £3 million a day has often been quoted by Brussels over the years. Why do think that the Irish have done so well over the years and fought so hard against any changes to funding cut backs. It is some £3 billion a year in EU grants and subsidies that has powered their economy and nothing else.

I know Tab - the question was is the 3 mio a part of a pyramid.
The EU will no doubt generate cash .....
Some comes from the 'Entrance Fee' and some will be the divvying up
of 'Cash Earned' .....
I can't remember what Irelands entry fee was placed at -
and that doesn't really matter -
Norway pays an enormous amount yearly in order to have trade agreements within the European Economic System and we have to meet with all sorts of irritating legislation - without being members and
without wanting membership !

Not really a part yes, but also a low corporate tax rate, a well educated workforce abd a bussiness culture, there's a reason half of London is now owned by Irish companies/individualsTab wrote:Pilgrim Norway.......The £3 million a day has often been quoted by Brussels over the years. And we have already paid back 20 billion of the 60 we have recieved and thats before we become net contributrs from 2013.....thats was the deal and we accepted it.

Good shout !
And the 60 bio came from which funding ?
Still sounds like a pyramid, doesn't it ?
I note today that some 35 days have been "GRANTED" to Ireland
in order that they may take another ( this time "RIGHT" ) vote !
The sheer gall of it ! To the EU a "No" is not a real no but a case of
"They 're unable to understand" let's give them another chance to get it right.......
I can't see the Ireland that I remember handing over decision
making to another foreign power - or powers -
A "No" is a no -
35 days might just make July look a bit like 1690
