A Gurkha soldier has had his throat slit in a suspected domestic incident in his lodgings at Sandhurst Military Academy.

Khagendra Pariya, 40, an instructor at the academy where Princes William and Harry trained to become army officers, is described as in a serious but stable condition in hospital suffering from a neck injury.

His 42-year-old wife was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident in the early hours of Monday morning.

She is now being held under the Mental Health Act.

Detectives at Thames Valley Police are said to be investigating whether his own kukri blade was used to cause the injury.

The legendary Himalayan soldiers are famed for carrying the machete-like weapons.

A Thames Valley Police spokeswoman said officers were called to the Royal Military Academy by ambulance crews at around 0.45am on Monday after a report that a 40-year-old man had an injury to the “upper torso”.

"The man was taken to Frimley Park Hospital where he is recovering in a stable condition," she said.

"A 42-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

"She has been bailed pending further inquiries and is currently detained under the Mental Health Act."

A Ministry of Defence spokesman added: "I can confirm a member of the military staff there is in hospital following a domestic incident in the domestic accommodation.

"It is under investigation by Thames Valley Police."
