Metal Storm

Post by clarkieni »

Metal storm technology is an electronically initiated, stacked projectile system that removes the mechanical elements required to fire conventional weapons.

Does anyone have any idea how you'd reload, would you have to change barrels? Also what stops the rounds falling out of the barrel if it's pointed towards the ground?

When it was first exhibited (the square box version with multiple barrels) they were talking about a theoretical rate of fire of one million rounds per minute!

One of the reasons it's suppose to be so devastating is because when fired the rounds are much closer together than those fired by a conventional weapon which are more spread out and so the firepower is more focused.

Here's a picture I found which I think will help you to understand what I was waffling on about

Note the spacing between the rounds.

Trog, who will you see in August? :o
This concept has been around for eons. Early versions used caseless rounds to bin extraction of spent cases. Storm uses multi-stacked caseless rounds fired electronically. Eventually there will be a sale-able weapon come out of this research. We are not there yet however

A lot of what metal storm is seems to be a "solution looking for a problem" it fires round out of a tube one after the other putting tons of munitions down on the enemy. The problem is that its not about tons of rounds landing at the same time. Battle is about rounds landing effectively over a sustained period of time. If it was all about accuracy and tonage we would cancel the artillery and use tomahawks all the time. But artillery can put rounds down range, inexpensively, over a long period of time winning the battle. I have seen some very cool civilian perposes for metal storm (firefighter stuff) but so far im not impressed with the military applications. Why do I need to have a gun that will fire 25 000 rounds a minute when I need a shot every two seconds for an hour?

The metal storm have a lot of other great application. My favorite is the 3GL, the Metal Storm Underslung Grenade Launcher, that contain 3 40x46mm Grenade in what we could call semi-automatic. The Grenade are made by ST Kinetic Singapore and are Caseless like the 40mm VOG-25 Russian UGL Grenade. The 3GL can't use standard 40x46mm grenade, and the Caseless Grenade can't be use in normal NATO UGL, but these grenade have the same power and recoil that the normal 40x46mm Grenade.

The 3GL is really too long, but a Bullpub version is on the way, and for now look very awesome.

You will notice that the guy reload the 3Gl without the 5.56mm Magazine, but they said that it was only a safety measure for the video.
