MT Driver

Post by peter1034 »

hi

Sorry if my writing is bad - am on an iPhone. I have a date to go in the RAF as an mt driver - passed my fitness, medical @ interviews. I would like some more information on the job from any other mt drivers. Some things however worry me 1.) working on a noisy airfield. - I know of people who have severe tinnitus (ringing in the ears) of working next to jets 2.) how dangerous is it working as an mt driver?? My m8s say this is an extremely dangerous job as enemies would target these. it sounds to me as a perfect opportunity to gain all my licenses & give me life experience however I don't want to live with severe tinnitus all my life of working & don't want to work in extreme dangers. I was unsure at first as I always wanted to become a long distance lorry driver but then I seen what the RAF had to offer. Thanks 4 advice.

Peter these days you get ear protectors, and as a MT Driver you should not be spending that amount of time near aircraft.

Tab can u tell me anymore about the trade - the RAF website has little information about the job. I so can't wait to start!!! Also y do u think my anxiety that I was put on anti depressants for was not brought up, I am now recovered so I feel 100% fit to start, however 2 years ago the anxiety I had was a little more than normal although I have never ever suffered a panick attack! Thanks 4 any replies!!

Peter, how old are you mate?

Anxiety and depression as mental illnesses should be viewed like any other illness. You take the pills, you get better. The stigma that was once attached to them is long gone. Don't worry about it. If you're over it, you're over it, end of!

If you suffer from anxiety and depression do you think that the Forces is the correct career path for you. Just imagine driving your truck around an airfield in Iraq or Afghanistan and you have mortar bombs and rockets dropping all around you, do you think that you would have have time to stop and take your ant depressant pills before the next salvo dropped

my bro was ambushed in Iraq in army whilst driving & was lucky not to get any serious injuries. I guess this is where my fear comes from - then again I want this career. Any existing mt drivers out there can give me advice what to expect? Cheers

I can only suggest trying www.e-goat.co.uk

they will have all the gen you can shake a shitty stick at.To give you a bit of a heads up your duties will mainly entail:

crashing wagons

getting lost

eating yorkies

good luck!

peter1034: You're probably over-doing it on the whole analysis thing. No sense worrying about what mught happen. If you want it, then go for it. Do your homework, go with the flow, and have a little fortitude. You will be expected to make decisions through out your adult life, especially as a member of the forces. No time like the present!

Peter, the majority of us here are serving or ex soldiers mostly from elite regiments. And even though I was in the RAF Regt I couldn't tell you the first thing about the job of an RAF MT driver, other than that they seemed to get a lot of cushy jobs shifting vehicles all over GB and spent a lot of time in the Naafi! ;)
