How Many Slaughtered in Iraq Since Invasion?

Post by yochanan »

In October 2006 the Lancet medical journal reported that 655,000 Iraqis had been killed since the illegal invasion and occupation.

Is anyone aware of any more recent numbers of those needlessly slaughtered in Iraq?

I was unaware the troops got any respect, certainly not from the British public, and most defiantly not from the government who sent them to die in the desert and then treats them like dirt when they end up with horrendous battle injuries.

In recent years the level of esteem held for the British forces has been diminishing at an ever increasing rate. Look how many people poured out into the streets to protest this war, and how many still continue to do so. I am aware of not such protests and grassroots movements that have formed in support of the war, the only people I hear supporting the war are the corporate medias talking heads.

I can assure you I have never wanted to join the forces. Although the training I received in the hills of the Kush is getting a little rusty, and I hear the resistance has acquired a lot of new weaponry since. Perhaps I might join up, do they do any special weapons training in the use of Iranian made RPGs? Well actually I guess the training in British and American arms would be useful, I hear a lot of them have fallen into the hands of the resistance.

What’s the pay like? Are those mercury filled shots mandatory?

Yochanan,

I'm interested to know (though only mildly I admit) why someone with a Hebrew name is so worried about the deaths in Iraq, Afghanistan etc.

When you refer to the 'Kush' I assume that you mean the Hindu Kush? Again, why would the Hindu Kush interest someone with Hebrew blood.

Do enlighten us.

That's not the only bit Rooper, he was busy quoting the US second amendment as gospel yesterday and using a mix of US / UK spellings. I suspect if we could get an honest account (unlikely) of his background, it would be quite instructive.

Note you don't specify how many of those were killed in sectarian clashes.
Think you'll find they've killed more of their own than we've had a hand in.

What you fail to grasp is that supporting the war and supporting the troops are two completely different things.
Nursey's right. A lack of support for the war does not equal a lack of respect for the people sent to fight it.

I disagree, that is the image the media likes to portray, and no doubt a certain portion of the population will download and regurgitate that kind of nonsense. But don’t fool yourself into thinking you have any real support from the British public or the world for that matter.

British troops are now seen by most for what they are: foolish youngsters who are fighting for empire in the desert for a bunch of criminals who are only too happy to send them off to die. Terrorists.

As for the sectarian violence being mostly responsible for the deaths, could be true. But the report is about how many have died who otherwise wouldn’t have had not the British and American occupation forces rolled into the place.

And looking at British and American history I think it would be fair to say that we all have suspicions about who actually kicked off all the sectarian troubles.

The fighting between Sunni and Shia has been ongoing for much longer than any Western country has been involved in the area.
It all stems back to an argument between the Caliphs over who was the best successor to the prophet Mohammad.
The current state of civil war in the country is a power struggle to decide which of the two factions will rule. Although it would probably be best all round if they followed Turkey's example and maintained a secular government.
