Any medically minded here?

Post by Guardian of The Wall »

Someone I spoke to has been having trouble getting into the army due to a heart murmur he has. It was picked up in his medical and at the moment, the doc has said he'll get back to him on it. What are these heart murmurs? A simple definition states it is "an unusual heart sound which may be innocent or reflect disease".

Is there any more biology to this problem?

Sometimes caused to a dodgy valve and the subsequent abnormal blood flow cause a "murmor" sound. Holes in the heart also cause it.

Sometimes caused by extra heart muscle that can be normal, or plaques from lipids which are then abnormal.

abnormal murmurs are most often due to heart valve problems caused by infection, disease, or aging.

By the way I know fark all about medicine and I could well be speaking out of the rear of my thong.

Arse in a skirt and it`s a "win win" situation 8)

Brufen is like snake oil, Frank 8)
It`s a cure-all.

RN Medics Course is three weeks on Brufen prescribing in the field and basic excused chits, followed by one forty minute period on caring, empathy, sympathy and bedside manner and how not to develop such vices when "treating"(and I use the word loosely) Royal 8)

Shadders was part of a bizarre scheme by the Andrew to mass distribute ginormous amounts of Brufen to the Brigade via mortars as a sort of "pre-emptive strike" to treat Royal before he even went sick. :-?
The Top Secret project was cancelled after Gulf One when Pusser realised Matelots are even worse with crew served weapons :o and most of the Brufen fell on Iraqi positions
Shadders, do us yer mortar tube phot matey 8)

I failed the medical because of a heart murmur but the next time I applied I passed the medical no problem. From what I was led to believe heart murmurs can be quite common and can sometimes simply be down to being nervous. Other than my own experience I know nothing about anything medical :D

The recruiter at my AFCO said that they defer you pretty much straight away if they hear anything out of the ordinary when it comes to your heart. Lichfield is meant to be the worst for heart murmour deferrals as they dont have enough time to listen properly, due to so many people attending there.

He did say though that most people who get deferred are perfectly fine when re-assesed. Could be just nerves making your heart beat an extra time or lots of caffeine. Obviously though there will be cases where the heart murmour is more serious, but i think they are pretty rare.

As a tip, if I was told I had a heart murmur I`d get the NHS to give me the once over anyway. If it`s caused by too much caffeine or serial self-abuse then you know how to correct it. It`s not just about failing a medical, there could be implications for you later in life.
Good luck gtsco, crazy name btw 8)
