Mike,Gingerbreads!,The stern and quarter galleries of the old sailing ships of the line (Victory) were especially elaborately carved and gilded, this being described by the sailors as 'gingerbread work,.Damage to these in battle was termed 'knocking the gilt of the gingerbread'. Trust me I'm a old HMS Victory Marine! No did'nt serve at Trafalgar was sick on shore at the time?.Aye JR

Anybody know the origins of "Come here my luvver, while I give you one." I did hear it was a term of endearment towards Powder Monkeys who had been observed climbing the mainstays in order to escape the drooling attentions of the precursor to stokers. JR, did you ever see this going on, or even hear the muttered endearment on dark nights in the Doldrums?

It was Owdun Circa 1664, upon entering his mothers bedroom and discovering 'Dad', pulling on a pair of white breeks and a smock with blue edging. Being a trained seamstress he recognised the quality of the work and uttered his admiration in time honoured fashion as we now know it. His application to join a Portsmouth fashion house specialising in fancy wear for sailors was ripped up when it was discovered he had a penchant for tarred pigtails and scrimshaw. The rest is history.

Helloooo Sailoor,on staggering out of the pub 'Ship Leopard' just outside of Pompey dockyard gate I was accosted by a sprightly lady of dubious fame, by the name of 'Pompey Lil' who uttered those famous words Hellooo Sailor!,clinging to the nearest lamp post I managed to gain an upright position upon seeing me in the uniform of the Royal Marines (Dockyard Cavalry) the good lady uttered the imortal words 'Bloody Marines'.Aye JR

Probably a Bugler, having achieved top C, fainted, discovered he had wedged his bonnet between two barrels and..............well the rest is too dastardly for your fair ears, but JR and Owdun both had a hand and an appendage in the lads downfall and subsequent elevation to Peer of the realm. Tales of the Golden Rivet are legion, Wully claims no knowledge, sticky Blue guards the Band's memories jealously, but all will out on May 16 and 17. Promise. Owdun and JR will be there with their touring act, Sticks will provide background music with his alto arse and .... well let's just see how it goes. As they say in the band room 'Innuendo'.
