Weapons for cadets

I'm At 305 sqdrn - Ashford as a cpl (after 8 months) and we have a range, but are lacking in the ammo and weapons department - does anyone know how much the cadet stuff costs, cos I'm thinking about starting an 'arm the teenagers' programme at our sqdn in a slushfund type thing with sponsored events and the like. Ive also read that a few times, and apart from your gobby attitude it makes no sense whats so ever.

Stop acting the big man (there are people here who have been there, done it, printed the tshirt and written the book), take a few paces back, calm down and try being polite and not so bone. This is a great forum bud, add to it not gob off in it.

Garth...as a corporal you wont have the authority to do this sort thing. Have a word with the Officer in charge of Squadron and ask him if he can contact any local TA base or near by Forces Unit were you can get some weapon training in and once they are satisfied that you all know what you are doing they should let you fire of a few rounds.

After being involved with the ATC for over 10 years as both a cadet and now a member of staff, I can safely say weapons are issued and not purchased. Speak to an adult staff member, the CO preferably, and ask about the weapons. If you can't get hold of any via the correct channels, Tab's suggestion is excellent, if your staff visit the local TA centre and enquire about using their range and weapons, they shouldn't have a major problem with it.

I'm already a marksman on the L-98 and the .22 (obtained when other sqdrns have donated their stuff and let us have a go), but cheers for the note. - btw, our sqdn is based IN the local TA - I have no idea what our staff did to hack the ta off, but we can't get our hands of anything bigger than a capgun for love nor money. short of raiding the place they're not turning them over.

There are CCF training teams about the place manned by regular lads that instruct CCF and ACF. Not sure how this works in the RAF side of things, but someone maybe able to highlight an equivelent system.

What about a weekend at a RAF unit? Blat away to your hearts content.

I was an ACF SI in the 80's. There's nothing like buying the PS a drink in the Sgts mess and having a quiet word in their ear about indoor range practice (or outdoor if a pipe range or 30m range is on site). I've always found that the TA, The UDR and the regs were dead keen to do what they could for future recruits.

One of the most popular things I ever did was to get a load of 24hr rat packs from Q and hold a mass 'cook-in' on the lawns outside the TA centre. The lads love finding out what's in the packs and how to use it. Those who managed to get hold of a folding tin opener (for the use of) were made up.
