To all of you who are suffering with "shin splints"
I'd bet none of you have shin splints, as these are tiny stress fractures in your shin bones.
What you are more likely to be suffering from in an imbalance in your calf muscles which is whats causing the pain. You usually get this if your usually inactive and then suddenly start running etc... and especially if you wear trainers all the time.
The simplest way to counter this is to build up your calf muscles by doing calf raises and other such exercises for building up the strength in you calf muscles.

I thought ‘shin splints’ was inflamed muscles and/or tendons. 'Tiny stress fractures' are called stress fractures aren’t they?! Lol. I don’t know what I have but it's sore. Iv taken a month off, got new insoles, put a ton off deep heat on since they were first sore, have run about a mile and a half since I first had them, I do stretching and was building my calf muscles up months before ‘it’ came on. And I wasn't inactive I was running for two months then I tried a 4.2 mile run in boots cross country (only done that once before) then my shins started to become sore. Then if it is that calf thing why is it taking so long to heal if I am still building my calf muscle up and was before!!

Well YOU might have shin splint, but what I meant was people think what they have are shin splints but MOST of the time it's not. I was talking generally not saying every one was wrong.letsrole wrote:I thought ‘shin splints’ was inflamed muscles and/or tendons. 'Tiny stress fractures' are called stress fractures aren’t they?! Well of course I'm no doctor so I could be wrong but my understanding of shin splints is that they affect the shin bones and if untreated can lead to stress fractures, hence my description although I take your point.
Just for the record I wasn't trying to have a go at anyone but a lot of people have problems they put down to shin splints when all they really need is to build up their lower leg strength.
Anyway there you go that's my two pence worth

Yes, if you start out cold too fast, but if you warm up properly, that will likely not be the case. Try going through a thorough warm-up first (you should have a slight sweat going), then go a little harder during your run.superbuzzmetal wrote:10 minutesI am always afraid that if I run quicker I might get too tired and end up taking more time to complete the run.
If you need to improve your wind, mix some sprint training, or interval training into your program.

Well i've only been on a treadmill 3 times in my entire life, the latest at my PJFT, where i got a measly 10:19. Although i know i could have done it faster, i just let the girl set my speed so i wouldn't fark it up, and only after the first 6 or 7 minutes of it did i realise i was most of the way through it already, and started jamming on the '+' button.

You think that's bad? I got 10:45 on mine!Konassin wrote:Well i've only been on a treadmill 3 times in my entire life, the latest at my PJFT, where i got a measly 10:19. Still, by the time I do the PRMC (3-4 months) I'll be loads fitter so my crappy time will give a clear indication of how much effort I've put in to improve! Good plan eh...
