USARMY

regarding ww2, if thats the bit you mean

the american public was heavily against involvment at first, they thought the uk would fall within 2 weeks (and sent reporters to cover the fall of england).

It was a combination of churchills personal appeals, and the reports of the US newspaper reporters from england that initially swayed public opinion in the US

The American Government has always been insular and only seem to get involved when their own security and business interests are threatened, Pearl Harbour, Cuba, Grenada, S Korea, 'nam, post 9/11 Afghanistan/Iraq, perhaps the exceptions are Bosnia and Mogadishu which were easy targets anyway.

I would still prefer to have the USA rather than Europe as allies, we in the UK have often stood alone many times with much help from our colonial cousins in ANZAC, something I shall never forget.

We, today, seem to be supporting the USA at the wrath of other nations. Personally we have too many of our own homemade problems to deal with rather than others and I feel it's about time we became insular, after all that is what we are, an Island Nation.

In 1940 Churchill was adressing the French in a broadcast and said "We are waiting for the long planned invasion, so are the fishes".

(Nothing to do with the topic but a top quote).

Wully, of course there's no offence mate - precious? moi?

I agree May18, who ever committed this must be mad to pay , and who ever these people are it shows they have no compassion and no respect for human life. It also enforces that the British are hated just as much as the Americans.

I really don't know what the answer is.

My heart says let 45 at em, jungle rules and all that but at the back of my head I wonder if there's something we should be doing that we're not or something we're doing that we shouldn't be.

Either way this is not much of a different beast to NI and I think should be treated the same by the lads, domes back on and vests with plates.

I do know how I'd feel if I were out there and that happened, there's going to be a lot of lads baying for blood at the moment.

I've never been a fan of the SUN's methods of portraying the truth, as whatever they print is purely designed to sell their newspaper.

However, to publish a report like this, even if every word is true, is reaching a depth I didn't think possible. We hear and see interviews following incidents like this, and everyone, without exception, states at one point or another, "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who died." I would guess the Editor of the SUN has said it! Most families want to know why it happened, what went wrong, and how can it be prevented in future. Most guys would want their families to think that their death had been quick and painless. Remember the 'execution' cock-up by Tony Blair, which caused such outrage from the families.

Let's hope none of the families and friends of those RMPs read the SUN, and if they don't, they can add me to their numbers. They didn't need this, and it can only add to their grief.

Reports like the one from the Sun was also the main lead on the Text pages of ITV at lunchtime today, I didn't want to read it, my wife was very upset, even if this is true there is no reason for the Sun to be so graphic, it is sensationalism to the nth degree and there ought to be a bit more civility around from those so called editors to moderate their tone.

Rant over..............!

Please understand, I was not criticising you for copying the text onto the forum. It was the SUN newspaper that produced it, and this is a military forum where we have the choice to read posts or not. I wouldn't have known about it, had you not posted it.

I reported on a previous thread about the death of a friend of mine in a helicopter accident when a local newspaper sensationalised the event with information that I knew to be far from the truth. It's an old wound.

It is a sad fact that there are those out there, with no connection with the military, who will have found that report 'interesting'. That's how the SUN sells newspapers.

My rant over too! Thanks May.

Well said RB

May, no criticism towards you, it is just the insensitive way the Sun and others from time to time come up with these obnoxious columns and headlines.

One real humdinger that will be hitting the headlines in the next few weeks is the trial of the alleged Soham Girls murderer, my God I am not looking forward to this and can imagine the headlines now. It is a pity that those who have recently tried to top themselves did not succeed, to spare us all the awful details about to hit the news stands in the next few weeks/months. I just pity the families of Holly and Jessica and their friends and families in the Soham community having to relive this horror again, God spare us all these sordid details.............

nod i see what you are saying, everyone in our office was horrified by what they read and i cant possibly imagine how those who loved them would feel upon reading it.

Still, it reinforces in my mind that we should simply walk away, and get them home

in my mind the role of the armed forces is to protect the sovereignty and security of britain. Not a pawn of the PM to send off on wars in the middle of nowhere.

There was a part in the article your talking about, near the front that said they showed those Iraqi bastards the pictures of there families to get them to show mercy...

Even after the rmp's had surrendered they were executed, this made me extremely angry, after our soldiers are over there trying to help...

I say let 1 Para at them I bet there baying for blood right now!!! They should completely level the town and kill any Iraqi who has a weapon!!!

Regardless of what I read was true or not...

Unfortunatley as long a B'liar is in power I can see this sort of thing repeating itself. Those poor blokes had no chance as far as I can make out.

Let's hand Iraq over to the other Arab nations to sort out. They are always moaning about the heavy handness of the West. Well, here is an opportunity to let the Arab world put there money where there mouth is. Let the "Arab League" take over. And bring out lads and lasses home.
