Sticky Bue,
I couldn't agree more. We might just as well call the SBS the Boat Troop of the SAS. In fact I'm not even sure they use boats anymore!! I mean how do you get a dune buggy into a canoe?!!

Sneaky,

Sorry but can you stop speaking in alegories. Do you mean the SBS have been sold down the river because they are now under the control of DSf and not the Commandent General ??

I really am having problems with this and would be gratefull for clarification. :o  :D

Chunky,
Sorry, but I do not like the way things are going. Tradition is a very strong opposition to changing things.
First they change the motto, then they change the selection/recruiting criteria, then they change the cap badge. What's next? The colour of the beret? Sand coloured perhaps? How can Army/Navy/AF ranks wear the green lid? We old farts Are very aware of the background of the SBS and would not like to see it diluted to to a wing/squadron of the SAS. There is just too much difference in their background.
I suppose the graduation to coming under control of DSF was inevitable but I wish thay could have done it where CGRM retained control but SBS were still availablbe to DSF. This may seem like a dreamworld situation -but we old farts have a very strong sense of tradition and I think the SBS is a Royal Marine unit and should stay so. Unfortunately funding takes precedence and tradition goes out of the window.
By the way can you stop using these posh words like "allegory". I mean I am only a former Royal Marine and althought I may be "Royal" that doesn't mean I know what these posh words mean!!

That cap badge is the most horrible bloody representation of SBS spirit I have ever had the disgrace of seeing.

As for the SAS/SBS merger.

Why the Hell do they wan't to do that?

Can't they just leave everything like it is and just create a JSOC(Joint Special Operations Command) entity like the Yanks did.

I have not seen the old unofficial SBS badge with the frog and paddles and whatnot but it sure can't be worse than that dagger thing they are proposing.

And why couldn't they have left the motto the same either?

I liked Not by Strength, by Guile.

Just becuase it's the Y2K does not mean we have to revamp every detail close to hand for the sake of change.

I would fully agree with a merger of special forces. Yanks up until had so many problems with their countless special forces, 2 or 3 from every service! In the end they all trained for all kinds of missions. What would be the difference sending in to blow up a radar installation the Green Berets, the Seals, Delta or Marine Force Recon etc. Then you have all the rivalry and who will make the headlines and cred that goes with it. Even Marines and Paras in the Falklands nearly started fighting each other to make it to Stanley first. You don't need that. SBS should have a different colour beret and the new recruitment policy should cover all services like SAS. Of course traditions die hard and should be maintained somehow anyway so you can't just create a new Special Forces unit and disband SAS and SBS as too much tradition has been created since WWII esp with the former. Have you noticed more often than not now they are just called UKSF?

I think we should just have the SAS without them being linked to the Army and if it comes to 'childish' things like beret colours and badges just wear a bloody green lid with the flying breadknife on it. (maybe call it SABS?)

Nice one Garryowen.

To take it further how about:

Cry ribit ribit and let loose the frogs of war.

Or is this a leap to far?

I gather that around about 18th November the SBS formally come under control of "The Fleet" and take on their new Cap Badge!! I'm not sure what "The Fleet" means but the new Cap Badge means they are no longer under control of the Royal Marines. (Or does anyone disagree?)
Is this just another step towards the amalgamation of SAS/SBS.?
Isn't there any one out there, that thinks this is going in the wrong direction? Why should SBS give up thier hard earned Cap Badge ,the Globe and Laurel.
The new cap badge looks just like the SAS Cap Badge except that it has "waves" instead of "wings" What next? Should the SBS change the colour of the beret? Do you really want it to be sand coloured.
I do think that the SAS and tHe SBS are different and should stay that way.

Sneaky, my personal thoughts are that Royal, when he`s passed his SBS course, should in fact keep his well earned green lid and cap badge, which is earned as well. The motto should be returned to what it was originally, and should be once again placed under bootneck control.I say let the SAS have all the publicity they want, and leave the super frogs out of the lime light, we all know what a great job the guys do, and its pretty much the same as the SAS, but with canoes to boot. The coming under DSF control...my thoughts of this, well, i can see why they want to change the cap badge, as all personel joining the SAS,ie from the Parachute Reg,and whoever else, change their cap badges, so this is probably the mentality of DSF, if the other regiments can, Royal can. But, Royal isn`t part of the Army, we have proud traditions, stemming back 339 years. So, why the change of identity? will this disuade personnel from applying to join the SBS? and are their numbers dwindling already, as we have seen advertisements in various military publications.

Bootneck,
Thank God there is someone out there who disagrees. The new cap badge is probably going to have to be embroidered, so it will have to be sewn on a beret (which I fervently hope will be green!).
I do hear on the grapevine that the SBS are having a slight problem with recruiting, in as much as the Commando Units are reluctant to give up their best men to the SBS (At least that was what one current SBS officer told me!) I don't think that is a good enough reason to give up the Globe and Laurel. That apparently is the thinking, that they need to "reward" the people that pass the course with something!! In much the same way as you get your Green beret or your parachute wings.
I think the current guys who serve are very capable of looking beyond such things.

SB, I`m still Corp`s pissed after being out since 87, I`ll not have a bad word said against our Glorious Corps. If I had wanted to wear a funny coloured Beret, I`d have joined the pongo`s crabs or even jack for that. But, when i went to join up, some hairy arsed bootneck took me to one side, and told me all the wonderful things that bootnecks did, well he must have been a salesman in civvie street, cause i signed.and i`ve never looked back, you must have read various threads on this forum, to see that we are all still corps pished, even the comerarderie on the yomp was great, and its this that is instilled into all us bootnecks, whilst undertaking training, which stays with us for the rest of our lives, (hang on, nearly fell off my soap box)and then for someone like yourself, who then goes on to undertake the SC training, get your super frog suit, and then told, hey, heres a funny coloured beret, ditch the coveted green, and stick this on yer head, well, i think i`d be chinning someone. but anyway, PM on its way SB, heres hoping you don`t know where i live............. :o

I reckon they should have the motto in Latin. It has a kind of classical heroic appeal to it.

quis audeo victum = who dares wins

fortitudo et dolus = strength and guile

I rekon they should leave well alone, if your cars running ok, you don`t tamper with it. "Not By Strength By Guile" as we know, is the original and best, so why the change?

Leave it alone!!

Yeah, ok fair point. The original "Not by strength by guile" is fine as it is, that didn't need changing.

I just like the latin ones, they have a certain poetic stature about them.
