Its a mix of both really....

I have waited so long for it, so i am excited that its finally happening.

But nervous naturally because i am not sure what to expect...

Just got to finish off my "shopping list" and finish my packing and i am ready to go :)

swimming

Post by Baz »

The BST (basic swimming test) for the Army and Marines when I did it was:

Jump of the high board in full kit (22lbs webbing, 9lb rifle, shirt, trousers, boots).

Swim 50m.

Remove rifle and webbing (hand them to someone poolside)

Tread water 3 minutes

Climb out (no steps)

Not allowed to touch sides or bottom of pool at any point.

fitness....from the female perspective

Post by mathilda »

OK.. into the lion's den I go. As what is politely referred to as a more experienced candidate (and that means the ripe old age of 39 and nothing else I hope!) I was referred to the nice(?) PTI's to ask what levels I should aim for at Cranwell if I pass OASC. They had to speak to their boss and he phoned me and said for a woman of my advanced years they expected me to reach level 7.5 on the bleep test, 20 press ups, 35 sit ups and 3 miles in 28 minutes. It seems only fair that if girlies want equal pay, equal respect and are going to be in the same place as the chaps then they should reach the same fitness levels.

Either they have given you duff gen or that is the required standard during training. I am 37 and did my fitness test the other day with a female of the same age. Mine was 7.3, 12 p/ups and 25 sit ups. Hers was 4.9, 4 (inclined) p/ups and I think 14 sit ups. Be we are an Equal opportunity employer!!!

So basically a fast walk and a bit of a loosener before some real exercise.

Don't worry boy's, you'll pass all the RAF fitness tests, be bright and bushy tailed :o , full of enthusiasm just out of trade training and you'll be posted to....(wait for it).....RNAS YEOVILTON.

Yes that is a Royal Naval Airstation. Home of the FAA museum that you went to as a kid and fobbed off in favour of the shiny serviceable aircraft of the RAF.

Look on the bright side though, phys is non existant unless you enjoy lunchtime circuits and it could be worse, you could be posted to Culdrose.

However if the RAF tell you we won't send you to sea, they are lying. Moral of the story? Join the Navy, save all the hassle. :P

Interesting, I had heard a lot of the techies were being loaned to the Fleet Air Arm and going to Yeovelton. I was also told yesterday by a very well informed source that in the next 10/15 years the RAF will operate from only 10 UK stns.

We have about 10 techies in all on the sqn, filling in the gaps. As you probably know, techies are better trained than both our AEM's and Tiffs put together, so soon they'll fill the superviser's billets as well. Great for us, means work gets done quicker, bad for them as they aren't doing what they are qualified to do
