Re: Marines or the Army?
hi Tom, i didnt mean it in the sense that everyone other than the Marines are slow, unfit etc...i meant that the Army aren't quite as well trained as the Marines (thats my opinion anyway, probably influenced by the media), but are still better trained than other forces and those on civi street.
With the PRMC, if passed, is there no obligation (?) to then join?
im sure i would, though just out of interest
Hello mate, none taken, no-ones having a pop, the opinions you have formed are a reflection of the profile held by some units in HMAF, the web is a good resource for your questions, but no substitute for visiting an AFCO get used to initials and acronyms btw!

PS Dig at RE is an RA thing they are a great unit obviously... we just like to have a dig at one another... dispute over some Guns, cant remember the exact details

Ha yeah, unless I'm 100% sure I stick with full names and titlesRA_Tom wrote: get used to initials and acronyms btw!

I'm going to head to an Army recruitment office, and get a bit of advice there. I have exams coming up though, so I'll be concentrating on them for now.
Hey Wotto I can remember when 42 first turned up at the begining of Herrick 5. Beleive me they didnt seem anything special. And like you I dont give a f*ck what anyone says but Ive always thought that the RM/Paras are the David Beckhams of the Armed Forces. The Press blue eyed boys while other good soldiers just get on with it without a mention.
I remember being told that us and the Fusiliers as well as another Troop and 7RHA had to stay out for an extra week because the 3 Cdo werent ready to Rip us. They wanted another week to be ready. The Fusiliers went from chilling at home to being on the front line in 4 DAYS. And it quickly turned to anger when we learned that 3 Cdo had decided to not keep Masa Qula but hand it over to Village Olders. Which effectivly means the Talaban. I lost mates fighting for that place Watto and God knows how many Royal Irish died there and you lot hand it over just like that. So Watto I dont give a f+ck what you think because I dont think much off 42 either.
Also thought camp life under your lot rather than 3Para was complete bullsh*t. Couldnt beleive the crap rules you had. Which included having to be in full combats including floppy hat 100% off the time. Including going for a shower. At least 3 Para let you chill when not on OPS

HCR, agreed the camp rules (I'm assuming you mean Bastion) were OTT, but the GSM who set them was Perce
And as for walking to the shower in rig, well you didn't use them that much did you...usual routine seemed to be wake up, dress, shave in rig with a towel over the top of trousers (?!), crack on for the day. That really started to get to us after a while. But then that may be RLC routine rather than Army, hate to tar you all and all that
Joking aside, must admit Bastion was horrendously pusser's, speed cameras ffs
Rig everywhere, shit jobs being handed out left right and chelsea that just didn't need doing (and I don't mean stuff that does have some kind of point, at one point we were filling sandbags to mark PARKING BAYS before some chump visited. Not because we had nothing better to do, deservicing from the previous day's op or reservicing for the next days apparently could wait
Don't know how much of it was just our Sqn, and how much was down to whoever was actually in charge of the camp (was it CO 42?!), but it was hardly ideal considering how busy we were.

Re: Marines or the Army?
I was in the RAF Regiment - finished my time on 2 sqn airborne in 82- but if I had my time to do again now I'd probably go for the Rifle Regiment. Because at the end of the day the fieldcraft and infantry skills was what I loved. Didn't really care if I was in an APC, a Herc a helo or a landrvoer, it was all just transport to me. My home was feet on the ground, SLR at the ready. And by that I mean exactly what someone else said, look beyond the training and try to identify what it is you want from a military life in the long-term.GuyNamedBob wrote:Hi everyone,
Just a quick question.
-I have been considering joining the Royal Marines for a while now, but I'm also keen to join the British Army. I'm not sure which one to choose as I'm stuck between; preferring the high quality training that the Marines offer (all be it a lot harder), but I would also like to have the better chance of getting into the Army, as I know the Marines have a high drop out rate.
-If I were to join the Army, I don't want to feel as if I haven't pushed my self as far as I can.
-I see the Army as being a lot easier to get into, but you don't have such an important role.
-Anyone who has done the Marine training and passed out, or even anyone who didn't pass out...
...how difficult would you say it compares to the British Army training?
As honest as you can would be great.
Thanks guys.
