The monarchy has no real power. They do not represent anybody except for the wealthy and the famous. Aristocracy is not needed. Power and respect should never be inherited, it has to be earned. Why should we waste monery on one particular family when millions others deserve and need it. Why should we bow down to someone just because they are born into a particular family? They are simply celebraties.

A republic wouldnt mean that we would have to pay more. A president could still stay in 10 Downing Street and would not neccessarily need his own air force one. It will be more democratic for a start. The royals have nothing to do with politics so saying that they are better than just corrupt politicians is irrelevant.

Traditionalism and aristorcracy is not the way forward. Equal rights means equal rights from birth.

We need federal democratic republic. Parliament should be dissolved because it is just arguing for the sake of arguing. Politicians today dont give F.A about what the public thinks, they are just interested in votes.

Ok first, finances. Quite simply, they make a profit, forget the dozens of charities of which they are patron. They simply make a profit for the country.

Secondly, on what they have given us. Some of britins greatest turning points have come because of an inspirational monarch. Elizabeth I, deviously juggling pressure within the country, and the spanish, her reign brought in britains golden age. Victoria, her husband revolutionised the british army, greatly reducing death due to poor logistics.

A steady focal point for the people and the army.

Goverments come and go, the queen has seen many prime ministers in her time. She does only have theoretical power, but its an important constitutional safeguard. She is also a none political rallying point for the armed forces. No chance here of armies rallying behind a dictator, utterly corrupt.

The commonwealth, the queen is not just our queen, but a symbol of historic ties between britain and many countries.


Tradition, well tradition, and keeping traditions is a way of preserving our culture and history. Britain has a rich history, sadly not taught in schools today. It should be preserved, and treasured imho. I imagine many younger countries would love to have our cultural heritage.


So, we have a profit making, stabilising, none political family, which embodies much of our history and culture..and with respect the only reason ive seen for getting rid of them is some sort of class hate.

I think you have to remember that the British monarch is not head of state in every Commonwealth country, India and South Africa spring immediately to mind.

Also I don't think the financial benefits are noticeable in other Commonwealth countries, not even Canada, Australia and New Zealand. I genuinely think they will become republics in my lifetime but its up to them not us. We are not going to send out the gunboats if they decide to go down that road they are their own soveriegn states afterall.

Having said that Australia recently had a referendum on the subject and norrowly voted against abolition, the same was the case in Quebec in Canada although I think the issue was independance from the rest of Canada.

This said even if they do become republics they mat very well remain full and active participants within the Commonwealth and it has to be said that Commonwealth matters mean more to them than it does in the UK. I can't see it affecting the relationship between our countires which is a very strong relationship.
