Commando: On The Front Line Ep. 3 - Discuss
See my comments in Episode One Thread.
This is a very poor programme.
The origins of the Brigade Patrol Troop.
Initially after WW2 in the 1950s' they were the
Cliff Assault Wing. In 1962 the Cliff Assault troop
was formed. Then 43Cdo in October 1962 undertook
the first winter warfare deployment in Norway.
In 1962 a permanent Brigade level Recce unit was set up.
A Recce Trp. was then formed and from that an ML Trng.
Cadre. ( MAW Cadre). Possibly the hardest of all courses.
In the Falklands their intellligence info was superior to that
of the SAS. (A General's comment not mine.)
The Brigade Patrol Troop are experts in long range patrolling
and reconaissance. Their primary task is instruction in MAW.
The secondary task is LRC patrolling for 3Cdo. Brigade.
Training is to SF standards and in certain skills higher.
Chas - Trained by WW2 Cdos and the CAW.

RM., Colonial Police & Queen's Regt HSF.
Chas,
No disrespect (Christ, definitely not if any of them find out who I am
) to MLs intended, yes they're the best in the world at their job and Recce/BPT are great assets. But then the same can be argued of many branches in the Corps; I was simply surprised that they are still classed as SF, given that SF now comes under a separate banner to that of the Corps.

I'm a bit confused. I knew that SF's are controlled by the DGSF, but are you saying that the SBS are more seperate from the RM now?druadan wrote:I was simply surprised that they are still classed as SF, given that SF now comes under a separate banner to that of the Corps.
Sorry if it doesn't make sense!

Yes - SBS, SAS and SRR now make up UKSF under DSF, and are not affiliated to any other arm officially. Realistically, for the time being at least, SB still recruit largely from the Corps and SAS mainly from the Army, although there is some cross pollination. SRR I believe is slightly more mixed, perhaps due to it's youth.
