Really? So the M16 is a development of the M14?

My personal weapon is a variant of the M16 (C7A1), and it's less than ten years since the last Garands (from which the M14 was developed) were phased out of service here.

Quick history lesson,

M14 adopted in 1957 as the successor to the M1 Garand.
Production of the M14 ceased in 1964.
Resumed in 1974 by the Springfield Armory Inc.

M16 aka the AR15 designed by Eugene Stoner.

Major difference between the M1 and the M-14 is the caliber.
The M-I and Garand were both .30Cal.

The M-1 had a nasty habit of biting people's thumbs.
Hence the expression"M-1 Thumb"
Could be loaded either by replacing the magazine or via a stripper clip.
The stripper,when ejected made the distinctive"Cling" sound you mention.
The problem was keeping the upper receiver open to push home the stripper.Done with the right thumb.When the stripper was home the bolt went into battery.

I cannot fathom one good reason that someone not connected to UKSF would feel the need to know this sort of information. Or why people not connected to UKSF would feel the need to answer a question on this subject.

Granted; forums are about the exchange of knowledge and ideas - but specifics about SF weapons seems resoundingly waltish to me.

I 'heard' from a 'mate' that the RLC is getting a new shelving system for stacking blankets and such like. Can anyone confirm that the trusted SM2250 stacking system is redundant? As I say it's only rumour but if you could all give me your personal, utterly useless and uneducated reply I would be most grateful.
