Really? So the M16 is a development of the M14?

My personal weapon is a variant of the M16 (C7A1), and it's less than ten years since the last Garands (from which the M14 was developed) were phased out of service here.

May I suggest a little light reading:

sd88,

Quick history lesson,

M14 adopted in 1957 as the successor to the M1 Garand.
Production of the M14 ceased in 1964.
Resumed in 1974 by the Springfield Armory Inc.

M16 aka the AR15 designed by Eugene Stoner.

M14--M16. Two different types of rifle.

Major difference between the M1 and the M-14 is the caliber.
The M-I and Garand were both .30Cal.
M-14 7.62x54 Nato(.308 Winchester).

The garand is a beast of a weapon.Fired one on a foreign weapons
shoot .Huge round, fires 8 rounds then it ejects the clip with a distinctive
sound thought i had broken it .
Maybe an overhill stab but not ready to hang
my kit in yet .If not quite death from the flanks
certainly a nasty fright.:)

The M-1 had a nasty habit of biting people's thumbs.
Hence the expression"M-1 Thumb"
Could be loaded either by replacing the magazine or via a stripper clip.
The stripper, when ejected made the distinctive"Cling" sound you mention.
The problem was keeping the upper receiver open to push home the stripper.Done with the right thumb. When the stripper was home the bolt went into battery.
OUCH :(

I cannot fathom one good reason that someone not connected to UKSF would feel the need to know this sort of information. Or why people not connected to UKSF would feel the need to answer a question on this subject.

Granted; forums are about the exchange of knowledge and ideas - but specifics about SF weapons seems resoundingly waltish to me.

I 'heard' from a 'mate' that the RLC is getting a new shelving system for stacking blankets and such like. Can anyone confirm that the trusted SM2250 stacking system is redundant? As I say it's only rumour but if you could all give me your personal, utterly useless and uneducated reply I would be most grateful.

Yours, sarcastically.

OOOH..
Must say I'm very impressed by your first few posts.
And your connection would be?
You must be something really special to be answering a three month old post.

Last time I saw Joe Cocker he fell off the stage blitzed.

Well, after all, it was my sole intention to impress everyone. Isn't that why we all joined this site?

I was also unaware it is poor etiquette to reply to 3 month old posts, I shall remember this in future.

My connection? None whatsover Wholley. I just like to post anonymously on subjects I am totally clueless about, seems to be somewhat of a fashion around these parts...you?

Yes, he is (I mean I am) somewhat of a dynamo on stage.

Cocker's relentless sarcasm does not easily equate with my conception of true wit.

I wonder where Billy C wandered off too  .

.

Another useful insight.

Wit is educated insolence.

The next best thing to being witty one's self, is to be able to quote another's wit.

Did someone die and make you God of all things Military?

Two choices,
Stop being a plank or join with the banter.
Make that three.

Fark right off.

How about "sexual harassment of decent folks", then? As to where you are, is that on or under the bench? And what's that on your shoulder? A rock of gravel, a pidgeon or a plain old chip?
