A bit "GO Electrolytes" helps me recover and lemon and lime flavour is damn tasty.
The only supplement I can think of that would make you fat is meal replacement supplements, and this is only if you take loads of it and don't train.
As has been said before a lttle bit of whey protein will help you recover you should go for it, you're not going to turn into Arnie overnight.
When looking for protein you want to get whey and look at the protein per 100 grams and of course it should be one that tastes good. Holland and Barrett sell their's at half price quite alot and is quality stuff, I've got a couple of Vanilla tubs hanging around.

Might have to give that a shot Hughser, a trip the ye olde holland and barret is in order.
By the way has anyone heard of using baking soda as a supplement? When i was doing A-level P.E my lecturer mentionded using baking soda, and it gave a massive boost in performance, although i think he mentioned it had to measured out EXTREMLEY accurately g/kg otherwise it gave the runs...yummy.
Also if looking for whey protein if you want to be really picky you want Isolate NOT concentrate, but this isn't essential as it's usually a mix of the two, but isolate is the better quality but you will pay more. Needs to be taken within the first 30mins post-training ideally aswell, but 2 hours is the maximum otherwise your muscles will be into a catabolic state and eat themselves.........(goes for food in general after training)

I think I heard about taking bicarbonate of soda, has it got anything to do with neutralising lactic acid, a bit too much for my liking.

That stuff's £15 for 1.2kg Matt...
If you want to get all hardcore try this: http://www.wheyconsortium.co.uk/Details.asp?id=49
It's only £33.95 for 5kg! Tastes foul but it's bearable if you hold your nose.

Yes I'm sure the absorption would be more efficient if they were combined, but it would also be slower. Most body-building types opt for whey in water after a workout to get the protein in quickly, then follow it up with protein and carbs shortly afterwards.
It really doesn't matter for us though. Just shovel in as much as you can!

As far as i know, taking whey protein with milk would be more beneficial than taking it on it's own, i believe alot of bodybuilders mix it with water for convienence. Whey protein absorbs in around 30mins and caesin protein (in the milk) 2-3 hours i believe, so you will keep the nitrogen balance better for longer. Correct me if i'm wrong of course.
