Does anyone know how much roughly it would cost to see a sports physio or go to a sports clinic? Thank you for your time.

Around London it's roughly £50-£70 for a first appointment consultation with a physio, from 30 mins to an hour.

Physios are expensive everywhere. Your supposed to get it checked out by a doctor first though arent you and they refer you to a physio?

first post woohoo!

Anyways, Green Machine any tablets are a bit excessive right now I'd say. before you try that try a combo of what the other guys mentioned:
Visit a specialist running shop (cheaper than an orthopedist) and have your gait examined via video camera on a treadmill. This may solve your pain problems.

I had something similar to you (sharp pain in right shin), turns out I over pronate and that stopped when I bought stability running shoes (and cushioned insoles for road running)

Have you been running long? As a rough guide, if you imagine the bony part of your shin (the tibia, sorry if I patronize :-? ) If the pain is on the right of the tibia, it's more than likely an injury due to too much running too soon. If the pain is on the left of the tibia (inside of your shin) then this is the more common form of shin splints that may be caused by your gait, leg length or like some unlucky people simply just because...

Don't go popping pills just yet, it may only take a bit of compressed foam to solve you pains, and ignore that shite about cheap but good running shoes; you pay for what you get. All runners know that Asics, Saucony and the like are 'designer' and desirable but they are for a reason: because they work well. If you do buy a new pair of shoes, buy the best you can afford.

Good Luck!

I have been to the doctor and he has given me some internal and external medication. I have also booked an appointment with a sports physio at a sports clinic and an orthopedist. The doctor told me to take ibuprofen oral capsules and an external cream also by ibuprofen. He told me that I could continue to run as it would not do any long term damage but if I wanted to get rid of the pain to really focus on my running then I would need to lay off till my shins had recovered. He also said they there is a chance that even when they are back to normal that it could start up again. He said if this did happen to then continue taking the medication he had recommended and to continue to see a sports physio if that didn't do the job.

I also spoke to the sports physio and he said it is common for runners and apart from running on concrete or running to much or to fast, he said it could also be the way the foot is hitting the ground which where the orthopedist comes in to play. The physio said he would first take a look at me and if he thought I needed to see an orthopedist that he would then recommend me. He said that the orthopedist would take a look at my feet and the way I run etc and then make insoles especially for me which could cure the shin splints and give me more comfortable run. The physio told me to take the same sort of things as the doctor, concerning what to take medically and not to run. He also said to continue with the rest of my training and just to lay off running till I was better. I was told that if it is painful at the moment or even when I am well again and have started to run to put ice packs on for 10 Min's around 3 times a day including straight after running.

I thought I would post everything that I have done and been told so anyone one with the same problem could come here and get and idea of what sort of steps to follow and what to take. Thank you again for your time and help.

Good luck mate, be aware though that those custom orthotics don't come cheap, but if you can afford it go for it; best not to mess around.

I had shin splints about a year ago and reading the advice on this forum i bought a proper pair of trainers, totally stopped running for 5 weeks (which at the time wasn't a problem because i hadn't even applied for the RM yet) and slowly eased back into it after 5 weeks... In all honesty my fitness never went down as much as i thought, After about another 3 weeks i was back to where i was before so just totally laying off the running isnt a TOTAL disaster at least, Just a necessary setback.
