Army taking over Rapier duty
With all due respect to those serving members of RAF Reg, if you want something special, join Para Reg or RM. RAF Reg are a bog standard infantry unit who are struggling to find roles for their troops. I know this because my unit is augmenting RAF Reg and fighting for some of it's jobs.
Anyone (virtually) in the army can apply for P Coy, so why are II Sqn special? Because they say they are, and who in the RAF are going to argue? Highly paid, extremely clever techies, I think not.
Anyway, give rapier back to the army, give aircraft to the RAF and just leave the RM to do their own thing, don't want to upset the booties!

You haven't thought enough about what you've just said, why was the Regt formed for? Because you can't always rely on the Army. Same goes for rapier, theres some complete biff's in the Army and their handed millions of £'s worth of kit..
The blue RAF can't drill. I dont think there is any Guin sqn's in the RAF that could take over from QCS, should that get binned too then?

Point./1 He's not from Leeming he's from TACTICAL POLICE WING!!!rockapemk1 wrote:Ah..lets play spot the snow drop from Leeming.
Granted you say that they arent anything special however your basic infantry soldier does not have half the training of you average gunner.
Nobody was comparing basic infantry to Royals or Para Regt! There is a difference! II Sqn (groundborne) are not special, they don't do "P Coy" they do their own version of it!

Personally, I would far rather see the rocks retain GBAD, we have given far too much over to the Army as it is and the buggers are like SERCO - once you let a few in they take over everything!!! QCS do a superb job and are very good at it but lets be honest the do pracise all bloody day and I do not agree that it is a job that can ONLY be done by the green bit of the RAF. As for comparing training to the average infantry soldier I do not think it is in any way fair to say the the average rock is better trained - more diverse maybe!!! Don't get me wrong, the Rocks are good at what they do and many if not most never try to promote the "elite" equivalent of Paras/RM bollocks that some of the kids do.

I can see the appeal of II Squadron, however they are nothing more then an infantry unit with para capability, would never compare them to the para's as the training and ethos is completely different.
If im lucky to get in (2007 if im on a Nov IOT next year) I will just be happy if there is still a Regiment for me to join regardless of what type of squadron it is or what it does, should that be throwing myself out of a C-130 or foot patrol around an airbase.
