Yeh - i'm going to go back slightly on what i said...(typical)..

Some weights can be good, but you CAN build good muscle with bodyweight exercises...obviously as you put on more muscle you end up lifting more weight which leads to putting on more muscle etc etc leading to a good size and great strength...

(This is where im going to go back on myself)

I would say though that I like to do some weights as well, like bench press, clean and press, squats and deadlifts because they are just awesome exercises for all over strength and buil which are damn hard to replicate with just body weight.

I would also like to say that I am pretty damn light and although I might be better at running then some of my mates they kick my ass on long tabs...time to hit the weights...

I help run a Gym in Avonmouth Bristol, the gym isn’t Pretty, its a Mans Gym the Type you'd find in the New York’s Bronx’s, Clean but stinks of Male Testosterone and good old honest sweat. Point, I am 56 year's of age, Heinz (57) in September and I’ve done weights all me life. you can train with weights to build muscle or you can train with weights to tone your body, I’ve done both. From 30 to 45, weighed in at 19 Stone 7lb to 20 stone now I’m getting old (don’t Like to admit it) I weigh in at 17 Stone 7 Lbs, just Toning Weights. Weight training has been proved by the Medical Councils here and in the USA to be of a GREAT BENNEFIT for a HEALTHY LIFE STYLE. Your Heart is a MUSCLE.

In the last 3 years we have taken 5 young lads through our "Pre PRMC Courses" and 4 we have seen Pass OUT, 1 still in training and doing fine.

Cheers JWT.

Photo taken 2 weeks ago, Bold, Yes, Old, Yes BUT not bad for 56.

I go to a mans gym in Yate Bristol, the kind where you can spit on the floor. There's a big guy there who's 65 and you wouldn't see him compaining about any aching joints on the contrary its probably why he looks so fit and healthy for his age. I was also reading a news article about a 94 year old who liked to do weights, I bet he gets the pick of the birds down the day centre.

JWT, I bet those lads who passed out liked to do a bit of power lifting, did they not? I suppose there alot better for it.

Hi themattmeister,
Not far from us, what’s the name of your Gym in Yate?
We have 2 or 3 Old Uns besides myself, between 65 and 78, the Oldest Sam, a Monster of a Man, still training 3 or 4 days a week 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day,
Bench Press 300lb + Olympic Bar.
Bench Press, Dumb Bells, 100lb each.
Horizontal Flies, 60lb each.
Squats, not to good on his legs so he does Leg Presses on a Machine, wait for this, works up to 500lb
Curls with Z Bar 120lb
Seated Dumb Bell Curls 60lb
Neck Press 200lb, Like I said one Strong Old Bu**er.
The only aches and pains the Old Uns tell me they get is if they miss one of the scheduled days in the gym.
I'm assured there’s NO TROUBLE down the Darby and Joan Club in Avonmouth.

Power Lifting, NO, none of the Pre PRMC Lads were allowed to do this, not required at this stage in their training.
For the PRMC Lads we have a "10 Set" Circuit, plus 30 Foot Ropes, Full Regain Ropes, Scramble Nets and Chin Bars. Plenty of Cardiovascular, Light Weigh Legs, Light Weight Upper Body and light Weight Arms. As I said all the lads done excellently on their PRMC and went on to pass out as ROYAL MARINES. They still come in to see us when they are on leave and still train with us although they are now fully into Heavy Weights and a lot larger in size than they were when they left us.

The Gym trained Andy Sheridan for 3 years until he left Bristol Shoguns for Sale Sharks Rugby Club and now he is said to be one of the Strongest, if not the strongest man in Rugby Union.

Sounds like a proper gym ,rather than the gym I go to which is full of effing mincing faggots admiring themselves in the mirror every 5 seconds.

Going to start kickboxing soon. Hopefully will find a better place to train through that...

JWT,

The gym I go to is called Peak Physique, I think, although there's no massive sign and the guy who owns it doesn't advertise he just runs the gym for fun. Bloody good gym though. Is there any chance you could post some of these weight circuits so I can give them a blast sometime? They sound like they work.

I remember Bob Dwyer sounding off about Sheridan back in the day, he benches something like 400-500lbs doesn't he?

Beast, take your coat off and do some more. not as bad as you think.
Things as we all know get a little exaggerated, Andy Sheridan is indeed STRONG, I'd go as far as saying the strongest in English Rugby, both codes. Bench press, 140k + Olympic Bar and collars, numerous reps, 150lb Dumb Bells, inclined press, numerous reps, Squats, 180k + Olympic Bar and collars, rep out to failer. Though not "Magical Weights" compared to Power Lifting he trained to his full potential each day, INTENSIVE for 2 hours. 1st day, Legs Lats and Biceps, 2nd day, Chest, Back and Triceps. 3rd day Rest.
Bob, of "Bob's Gym" attended Andy's wedding a couple of weeks ago, Bobs the midget in the middle, Bobs 6 foot, 16 stone. ME, I had to turn too. Being the youngest I ALWAYS get the Shitty Stick.

Hi themattmeister,

Cargo Net 30 feet Top to Bottom, Climbing Ropes 30 feet High, Regain Rope 30 feet Long, 15 above Ground. 3 times around that sorts the Men from the Boys.

I've just started at my gym and I do 1000 paces on that paceing machine, 40 mins on that bike machine and 1000 paces on that pacing machine again and then on that rowing machine i do 1000 metres in about 3.59 seconds on level 10. I realise this isnt that good and i don't do any weights yet but is that ok with starting off? and is there anything I should change?

JWT your gym looks quality.

Being a short ass, ass-to-grass squats were my favourite exercise and the muscle they slapped on my legs is still serving me well now, even though I havent lifted in 5 months, on sprints, jumps in circuits etc.

JWT,

Do you get these guys to sign a disclaimer before they use the equipment. I can see it now *some sniffling little weasel on TV*

"I was climbing on a cargo net at the gym when I tripped and brutally shattered my skull against a 40 kilo dumbell. Litigeous parasites direct helped me claim £10,000 for being clumsy and having shit for brains." :D

If a pace machine is a step machine than that will help you build endurance in your quads. However I always prefer the old fashioned way of sprints, alot more fun and you'll be doing them for real in the PRMC and not an intense step aerobics class. It's good that your mixing it up but running and not fancy machines should be the core of your training and try rowing for a bit longer i.e 20 mins atleast or there abouts. I'm sure if you ask JWT nicely he'll give some nice circuits to do, he seems to know what he is talking about.
