To all British servicemen and women...
Defiant, Steve C, I think you have both missed the point...
Nobody has the right to "Take out" anyone without a trial, bring the Terrorist to trial and let them face their public! Stricter laws should be in place and enforced by all nations.
The point here is Terrorism no matter who is involved should be stopped only the innocent are hurt, the terrorist and the Soldier are involved in a war but this war is waged the cowards way, the way of the terrorist. In the case of NI, the people are not at war just a minority who have resorted to terrorism and bullying of their own people. Democracy did not get them what they wanted.
The British Soldier is not in NI because he want to be there he is there to protect the people of NI. Okay not everyone sees it that way. and of course the odd army (ARMY) unit has shot the wrong person or persons but it is difficult to prove the person laying bleeding on the floor had a weapon when his comrade stripped it from the body to make it look like a wrongful kill, and to stir up the media. The Soldier is trained to kill but cannot fire indiscriminately he has procedures to adhere to and can only return fire in certain conditions… But it is his/her life on the line!

Hehe, yeah I think we've strayed abit too far from reality
. But it does show how complicated things have gotten if left and not dealth with. For the most part they do know who the terrorists are, but they can't touch them because of the politics. Whereas in Afghan it's a no holds barred war against terrorism. The solution is so simple, as simple as in the previous posts, yes people should have a fair trial, but these people use the justice system to their advantage, they misuse it so therefore they should not be given that right. If someone abuses a right given to them, it should be taken away.

Hmmm
I find it very interesting that some of the posters have constantly said that Americans are ignorant, that we are hypocrite's and that we basicly couldn't find our Butt's with both hands. Well I think if these people had a little better understanding of American culture you might not be so harsh.
First off, 1/3 of all Americans are by some extent, of Irish ancestory. And these folks didn't leave Ireland under the best circumstances. And when they got to the docks in America, they had signs put in their face's that read "No Irish Need Apply". My ancestors came to America, to be Americans, but even in America they were the "Stinking Irish". That's why we look after each other. By the way, 600 years of English oppression isn't simply forgotten because we changed our names from O'Doyle to Doyle and so forth. So Americans and the British may be friends, but Americans and the Irish are brothers.
For the most part Americans aren't inclined to worry about the woes of the British especially since practically all of our ancestors were under the British yoke of Colonial Imperialism at one point in time. Would you ask the people of India or China to worry about your efforts against the IRA? Please don't be so naive to think that all Americans are concerned about a little island in the North Atlantic. Not every one here is of European decent. Remember different people have their own histories and cultures. And most of them involve the British in a not so positive light. Besides I don't think your goverment is going to ask for the US Army to lay siege to NI, to correct the situation to it's liking.
That being said, those Americans who are aware of the situation in NI, most likely feel that the British have no right to be in Ireland what so ever. Do I think that the situation in NI is deeply tragic, yes. Do I wish there would be no more violence, obviously. Could I speak to the day-to-day situation in NI. No. In short I want what's best for the people of NI, but do I know what that is, no. Could I speak authoritively on the subject, No. But could any of you speak authoritively on any one of a thousand different ethnic struggles that happen every day in America. No. So don't go calling some one ignorant or stupid when you know nothing about them or their culture.
