They used to be. The BBC is crap now, about as good as CNN. Which isn't saying much. The Guardian is somewhere around the NY Times or LA Times ( left ).snyder wrote: The British press, and TV news, is definitely superior to ours.

Nah, the BBC is still great. I watch it all the time on my cable station, and they are head, shoulders, kneecaps and toenails above anything we have in the U.S. The whole attack on them was orchestrated by Rupert Murdoch. It's incredibly transparent. To me, it's remarkable how a country of 60 million can have a demonstrably superior press than a country five times its size and significantly wealthier.

The early ones were turbo-jets as opposed to tubofans now. The jets also had water injection on takeoff, so on a cold damp morning with dense air, there would be lots of smoke.... and lots of LOUD sound. The turbojets had a higher fuel burn to air ratio and very loud. Notice the spread too. On a cell take off; 1 goes right 2 goes left, 3 goes center. ( I think I have the order right, I forget ) Saw 3 go left once and because of the jetwash of 2, almost crashed, cleared the ground and recovered after what looked like a terminal side slip.

Baloney maloney
Ooops went all American there for a mo
You are talking horlicks me old mate.
Pratt and Whitey engines are shite, period (see I`m doing it again
)
They burn like that all the time, look at a Herk with that big exhaust signature. Look at Rolls Royce, no smoke, less noise, more power
But probably half as much again, on the cost vector
Here`s having one "up your bottom"
Chin chin

.. Hey ya Bum(sorry, that has a different meaning there than here)
Nope. Never been on a flying buff. BTW the remaining H models are low bypass fans not turbojets... so the smoke isn't bad.MrMitty wrote:Cheers ELP
What do you mean by US air power reformation? Still the most powerful airforce out there aren't you??
Cheers

Well yes we are in good shape, but far from being in great shape.
Many dumb programs forced down the militarys throat that they don't ask for, by congress and the military, industrial political graft complex.
My examples for this week would be:
-Not fully funding depot repair spares for the F-15E. Yet still going out to buy a few more to keep the production line open. Not only dumb but wasteful. I tend to know where a lot of the "bodies" are buried in the USAF so there is plenty of room for improvement.
-Others would of course be the dumb decision in fielding of the C-130 J model. ( I could stand out in the middle of Leicester Square in London and yack away at the passing public like some kind of twit, for hours on that subject alone. )
-Lets see whats another abortion? Easy answer: JSF... at $240 Billion + it is taking away from UCAV X-45, and X-47, and a host of other things that need to be sped up and paid for:
-Common cockpit upgrade for C-130s
-Avionics and engine upgrade for C-5
-Proper F-15E sustainment for the rest of its life
-Somekind of sensible plan for tanker replacements
-EB-52 upgrade
-Smart racks for B-52
-B-1 avionics and flight controls ( as in; a complete replacement of )
-Retiring older airframes we don't need ( yes retiring costs money) like:
----the small motor F-15Es ( keep the big motor ones )
----F-16 Block 4x and below over time- that means...
-Start up a low rate production of F-16CFT Block 60 over time
-Accelerated R&D for B-3
And that is just the short list.... anyway; fun topic.
