My how times have changed, all we had was a light weight blanket and a poncho. After a while you where so shattered you could not care less as long as you could shut your eyes.

I've got a Snugpak Softie 12 (Osprey). It is extremely warm, packs down to a relatively small size and is much lighter than the issue bag. A good buy in my opinion (though perhaps pricey at £100).

Stay clear of the Softie 3 (Merlin). If you use it outdoors at any time other than the height of Summer you'll freeze your nuts off. I only use mine for mountaineering trips where I'm staying in a bunkhouse or similar as it is very small & light.

There does seem to be a fashion for abandoning issued/pussers kit for expensive kit complete with go faster stripes.

It's fair enough to compliment your gear with bits and bobs, who hasn't carried a few herbs and spices or a racing spoon, but to go all out on purchasing stuff that HM forces will give you for free seems a bit daft to me.

I think "compliment your gear with bits and bobs" is the best way to go... pair of pussers boots and gortex socks, pussers rat packs and your own Coleman and bag of instant flavour (chilli!!), NBC suit and a nice pair of latex boots Dang, didn't mean to mention that one

Just to drag up an old question

Does anyone know the temp rating of an issue bag without a bivvy bag
