If you want to use supplement's start off with Whey Protein. I'm a professional thai-boxer and I use a brand called Peak Body Nutrition www.peakbody.co.uk, their Whey Isolate works for me. But there are hundreds of decent brands out there.
Whatever you do stay away from Maximuscle, its full of sugar and is a load of bollocks.
Make sure you drink a protein shake straight after training, ideally within 5 minutes but upto 20 minutes after.
Try a search on supplements mate, it's been done many times... what’s said above is right (especially regarding maximuscle) look for Optimum nutrition's 100% gold standard Whey Protein its also a decent brand and decent price if you look in the right place.
Supplements are un-necessary but for athletes and people looking to get more out of there training they do have there place if used right, there’s also a hell of a lot of crap out there so be careful what you buy. I've always worked on the premises of knowing exactly what I’m putting into my body and researching heavily before using anything.
I have used ZMA, Creatine, beta alanine and fish oils all of which I’ve found beneficial for various reason, but all of which I’d do just fine with out
What's bad about MaxiMuscle?
I've not much brand experience, so it's hard for me to compare.
I've heard mixed opinions, most say that MaxiMuscle stuff is good but expensive.
How do you define what is a good supplement?

Maximuscle is full of sugar. I tried it and it did not do what it said on the tin, plus other lads in the gym have tried it and said the same. I was even told not to buy it by the staff in my local supplement store even though it was the most exepensive. Brands i would reccomend are Peak Body or myprotein.co.uk and you want to get 100% Whey Protein.

Yeah I agree with adam, seriously guys the BEST supplement you can get for running, bodybuilding, weight training ect is TTP it's expensive but VERY VERY good. It has cretine mixed in so it helps with recovery and gives you a boost. I reccomend it .

For me Maximuscle is far to expensive and the same (even better) type of products can be picked up for much less... I dare say that they do 'work' and I have herd that the protein supplement is high in simple carbs which unless used post work out is a bad thing, but could have some + points post work out with regards to insulin spike.
I've never used or looked into them due to the price so wont advice for or against (if you're bank balance allows )
i use phd nutrition products or optimum nutrition, before and immediatley after weight training. I prefer these two simply because a lot of other stuff is absolutely foul tasting and gives you the most incredible wind!

Yes PHD are by far the best tasting brand. One of the lads at the gym uses them, mint-chocolate, beautiful!

PHD are good. i use PHD Synergy ISO 7, its pretty good for protien. ive noticed a gain since using it. contains BCAA'S glutomine, creatine etc. so pretty good. but its also made me a tad on the aggressive side due to the fact it help you produce more testosterone. but i still continue to use it known the less.
OK I don't use any supplements at the moment so can someone was post a beginners guide to it please: ie. which is the best, how to take it, how often and what they help with.
Always kind of looked it as cheating (which it isn't I know) and always been skeptical of performace enhancing stuff. But perhaps its time.
Supplements are best taken about 90 to 60 minutes before after for best results. but depending on what supplement you go with depends on how much you put in and how much you require. the recommended intake of protein is 55g. i think most supplements are around 30-40gs
some people take them during the day post workout.
hope this helps a little bit. im not all knowlegable about these things as ive only been using supplements since the beginning of the year. but from what ive learnt and used. these have helped me.

I was always told that its 1 gram of protein per 1lb so for example if you are 135lb you need 135 grams of protein, most protein shakes have about 25g of protein and if your taking 4 of those per day thats 100g and the rest of the protein you need should be made up from food.
adambatley wrote:Your body can only process 30g of protein every 3 hours, the rest will go to waste.
And this is the same for everyone, no matter what there hormone levels, size etc?
Everybody is different, numbers can be thrown about... I’ve herd up to 50G a hour but the fact is it's going to be different for everyone 1-2 G per Lb of body weight spared over six meals is often seen as the norm... if you aren’t gaining or putting fat on change it accordingly.
Don't want to stir things up or start a debate, but you won't be able to take any of these suppliments in training so surely you want to get your body used to just having everyday things like water? I understand some people will use it to gain weight (those little racing snakes out there), but if your just training then use what you will be given when you join.
I don't really know as much as some others, so feel free to put me straight lads!

Not really putting you right... I’m not qualified to do so but you're body doesn't get used to it (as in addictive or reliant) just as you don’t get addicted to chicken breasts. the recovery benefits and fitness that could be gained whilst on them however will be there when you stop taking the supplement. I always favour solid food to a shake but sometimes when I finish in the gym its just easier to knock one back rather than waiting a hour or more to get home.. showered, changed and cook a meal etc
I know where you are coming from and as I say I am speaking as an athlete at the moment not a recruit (things will change when I come to solely training for that)
Supplements for me are a little bonus that’s it... hard work, good diet and rest make up the rest.
