Hi JR
I was going to be sarky there but I had a change of heart, I know how easily offended our maroon brothers can be.

What was their mutiny for?
Archie.

Good old Sven, compulsary reading. The barracks in which 10 Regt RCT were located in Bielefeld gets a mention in one of his books, used to be a Panzer base in WWII. The tanks were kept under the parade square which protected them from air strikes, damned clever the Hun. We of course had it all bricked up which wasn't so clever.

 Archie,Muar camp at that time was a 'Transit camp' and the living conditions dismal! (Have'nt we all been there),the other theory was that some joker who had been arrested by MPs,Court martialed and sent back to the UK,and on his way out of the camp shouted to his mates I'm going home.So they all decided they wanted to go home?.Aye JR

Cheers JR, you can't blame them. Perhaps the maintenance people at Okehampton Battle Camp should take note.

All military formations have mutiny skeletons in the cupboard,1919,Russia , two officers and eighty-nine men of the 6th Batt. R.M. found guilty of mutiny at courts-martial.All sentences, including 15 death sentences, were later much reduced. All the men were conscripts who should have been released after WW1,but were kept in Russia fighting the Bolshevic forces, and obviously very pissed off about it.

Just spotted this thread.
The Canadians also mutinied at a holding camp in North Wales , this was after the end of WW1 and the Canadians were virtually just left to fend for themselves while they waited to be sent home. The camp at "Kinmel Park" is still in use today though much reduced in size, the mutiny was harshly put down by a british battalion also posted in there. this was also made into a documentary for t.v., if you are out that way drop into Bodellwynnan Castle near St. Asaph trhey have/had a section devouted to the castles role during WW1.

as THEY say

Ay

We had a new CO in Cyprus in 1956, from a County Regiment. We were living under canvas at the time, no electricty, No baths or showers, no proper toilets, you had draw drinking water early in the morning and keep in a a pottery jug during the day in your tent, as the pipe carrying the water was laid across the top of desert and rocks and if you tried to draw any water after about 06.30 hours it would be hot enough to burn the skin of your hands. Well this prat wanted us to to be turned out like the Brigade of Guards, well he form us all up and told us just what he wanted from us, then he tried to break the ice by telling a joke, well there was total silence, till some wag said "oh thats a joke, ha ha ha", well every one was laughing except the new CO who demaded that the man was arrested, one of the officers turned around to the new CO and said if will point the man out I will arrest him, well he couldn't and stormed off. Well the next day all the NCO's were charging every one in sight with every offence they could think off, the officers were charging the NCO's and so it went on. When you appeared before the your OC you were given a minor task and asked if you accepted his punishment or you could request a Cout Martial. Well every one went for the Court Martial option and with in days there where more than 600 men awaiting Court Martial. About three days later the new CO had dissappeared never to been seen again and the 2ic took over and all charges were dropped with a warning that such a thing would not be tolerarted in the future.

The entire Regiment on parade, 600 blokes, all sat down refused to soldier. RMPs called to restore order complete with nasty barking wolves.

CO, 2IC, Adjt, RSM all sacked in subsequent inquiry - never made the press.

There was a case in the papers last year I think it was, where a senior NCO had a sex change. All the troops turned up on parade in drag, high heels make up even handbags, and when the they where all reported to the CO, the CO just fell about laughing. The senior went off in strop to equal opportuinities board.

The Etaples Mutiny was not led by Percy Topliss, the monocled mutineer was basicaly a work of fiction based around the Bull Ring Mutiny. It took place over a few days and calmed down when an infantry Btn from reserve (HAC) and a yeomanry cavalry Regt were called in to put it down.
It started because of harsh treatment by the camp staff (nicknamed cannaries). I believe only one person was executed as a result and he was a corporal.
The French mutiny of 17 occured after the Neville offensive when most of the French army refused to take part in any more offensives. Legend has it that the ringleaders from each division were sent to Paris to meet with Joffre. He agreed to their demands for more leave and no more offensives, the men were sent back to their divisions by train. On ther way
back the train was stopped the men all pushed out of the train into a field and blown to pieces by French artillery. There has long been a controversy over this event, the Frogs will neither confirm nor deny it.
Keep the faith.

During the later stages of WW2 a Battalion of Para's was sent out to Burma. When they captured a POW camp they where so upset by what they found they hanged all the Nip guards from the trees along the road and all the other Nip POW joined them. A Colonel from the Guards appeared and demanded that they stop. One of the Para's just stuck the barrel of his sten up his nose and told him to sit down and be quite until they where finished. The out come was the Battalion was court martialed and dishounrable discharged from the Army and were sent home in disgrace. Well they where quite happy about it, they got home first and the pick of the jobs.

Hunger strike 1 Para early 60s. Ordely Officer doing his rounds at meals times " any complaints" "no sir" the usual reply. On this occasion he was be followed by th RSM saying "Get your hair cut",so the lads decided if they couldn't have there meals in peace, they would go on hunger strike.
Meal times in the army is a parade an if you didn't attend you could be charged, usually nobody bothered much, except if you passed out on parade and they found out you hadn't had breakfast.
Everybody attended the meals and just sat at the tables without going up for there scoff. The Orderly Officer doing his rounds again asked why nobody was eating and got the reply "it makes your hair grow".
The Daily M..... got a hold of the story, can't remember the out come, but years later I met the RSM, he was then an officer in the TA and he was shouting about something or other and I said " if you shout at us again I'll write to the Daily M......
He smiled and said he hadn't realised I had been there.
Sadly he is no longer with us . RIP Pete.
