Thanks for all of your replies! The decision is so difficult because if i became a plumber and then got my own business i could earn over £100,000 a year after tax. But i don't want to be 30 years old with my hand down a toilet wondering if i'd be in the desert on a quad instead. I was under the impression that 19 is the maximum age you can get an apprenticship at as a plumber (because of the union), so i couldn't become a plumber after leaving the marines. I dont know what i'd do after leaving the marines (probably work in Safeways). And i'm hearing on the news about the the armed forces laying people off just before their pension is due so they can't get it! I really do want to be a marine because i have a need to define myself from everyone else. Other people in my familiy live life at the xtremes, my parents are milionaires any my brother is studying at the top university in Scotland but is also an underwear model and hooks up with a different girl every night. Compared to those to xtremes i am nothing special but i would be as a marine. I think people sacrifice greatly to be in the marines and they aren't given justice by the government or the military. I am still undecided as to which career to do, because the choice will affect not just the next 20 years but my whole life... and at 17 that is a hard decision to make.

Yuri,

don't know if you saw my post but i'm in a similar boat to you. However i'm right on the limit of age! 27. if i was you at your age I would go for it. If i could have my time again and know what I know now. I left uni with a degree, bummed around in various jobs that have not statisfied me at all. Everything I've done has been pretty dull. Honestly mate money isn't all it's cracked up to be. Quality of life and satisfaction is what counts. It's taken me till 27 to work this out, but now I intend to do something about it. As for girls, don't worry about them!! they love a man in a uniform!!!

Surely if your parents are millionaires then you don't really need to be getting yourself a trade like Plumbing; or even worrying about the financial aspect...

Neb1010, i agree with what you've said. I read that you were a tri athlete? I wanted to do triathlon at one stage but i never did it. Even though my parents are rich i don't like the idea of living off of their money lol. Even if i do chose the marine i don't know if i'm cut out physcially for it... im not that fit just now.

Two month ago neither was i matey, but ive been working at it hard and im making good progress.

It will all come in time. :)

Being very unfit when i was initialy intirested in joining, looking at the minimum requirements for passing the PRMC was like climbing a never ending mountain but when you get into a routine then it soon becomes apparent if you put the work in that its all acheivable - create short term goals for yourself and you'll be up to and over the minimum in no time.

Goodluck

Im not sure to be honest matey.

At the moment im at college, and when the course is finnished (in 3 months) im wanting to get a part time job so i can get some free time during the days to get some proper training in. At the moment im just building myself up to that.

As far as PRMC goes, i'd like to apply for mine and i think i'll be ready by next January. A long time away but it'll give me 6 months of good training in before hand. I think i need that amount of time because i'm going from being extremely unfit to the opposite.

Im only 17, but i wish i handt been such a lazy arse in the past few years or i would have been able to join sooner. I also need to get afew things cleared with my doctor to see if im alright to join the forces. When i was smaller i used to suffer from migraine, im seriously hoping it wont hamper my joining.

yuri,

do triathlon it's quality. if you need any help or advice let me know. Don't worry about being unfit. I used to smoke 20 a day when i was a student! I had a drunken bet with a mate that i would be triathlon world champ in seven years! because i'm so stubborn, i quit smoking. I then took up triathlon. After two years I represented Great Britain at the world champs in Nice and did the same last year in Ibiza. I am steadily climbing the rankings, i think last year I was ranked in the top ten in Britain in my age group. This year i'm gonna be even higher. In the world I think I'm in top 50. I might not make it to world champ but I'll die trying! you just need focus mate thats all. focus and commitment. do it today, go out for a run or the gym. do it now.
It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it only matters if I win or lose!

Good luck GhostBear, I'm also aiming for January at the latest, but im hoping for a few months earlier if i can get my act together. That is amazing neb1010, good on ya like its hard to believe top 50 in tha world! Not many people could go and achieve that, i'm sure the marines will accept you with open arms they want athletes and i'm sure you've got what it takes. I cant do triathlon now cause i dont have a triathlon team where i am (in the highlands of scotland) but i used to go to St Andrews University (dropped out during first year lol) and they had a good team. I am only 17 so im living at home with no job so i have non stop free time to train. I guess i'm lucky in that respect. I used to get migraines as well but my main worry is asthma... its nothing major but it is unpredictable and i never will know if its truly gone. Neb1010 i'm sure you'll be a serving marine before i even attemp my PRMC.
