Strange we ended up in Guildford really as every single member of my family are from Yorkshire. Dad's from Doncaster Mum from Harrogate and i was born in Leeds and lived there till i was three then moved to Norway for 3 years then Liphook then Guildford! work that one out! (my dad works for the National Grid)
As you probrably can guess id have a hard time choosing a "Local" regiment. lol.
Try a 4 mile run every other morning and stop every half mile for 50% of
your pressups [thats 8 stops]. At the end of the run reward yourself with max pressups . Each subsequent run increase the number of pressups at each stop by one. This kind of run is best done on a country walk... The other mornings do a max-pressups, and then do it once more again.

Sorry about the life story there guys! I have no idea why i wrote that!
A good way i find to increase push up max is a method i found on the Marines forum (i think!).
Basically you do 10 push ups, pause for 5 -10 seconds then do 9 push ups, pause for 5 - 10 seconds do 8 push ups etc till you have gone right down to 1 push up. You actually end up doing 55 push ups in around 2 - 2.5 mins. Every time you attempt it you reduce the rest between each set till you can do the 55 without pausing. TOUGH but well worth it especially when you get the burn!

Good idea about the coutry walk - Youd do that though a town, people will think ur a knob just randomly stopping and doin pressups! But good idea all the same.
I've tried the Pyramids, they're bloody hard. Too add to what you said. When you do the last push up, rest for 30secs, then try and work you way back up. E.g. Do 1, wait 5-10 secs, to 2 etc.
I'm going to give this a try for two weeks starting today (calling today 'Monday')
One question - It would be stupid to continue such a programme for a prolonged period of time - So will I be able to maintain my new 'max' for a few weeks?
Surely you don't adjust the PERCENTAGES each week; you keep the same % but as your max will have increased, the %s equate to more reps than they did the previous week.
Yeah, that would probably be the best. Did this routine a couple of years ago and it definitely works, works for any exercise, pullups/situps etc. The routine really just boils down to doing a few pushups whenever you have the chance throughout the day so your muscles will get used to doing them. The guy that came up with this routine (Pavel Tsatsouline) likes this kind of training because your muscles are never totally knackered like after a gym session. If you're deployed on ops or in the police force you might be called out at any time and there's no point in having your muscles totally useless from a gym session, that's the way his philosophy goes anyway.
