I believe the term Pongo comes from the music hall days. The comedian Dan Leno Had a Dog called Pongo that wore a Broderick Cap. The cap was issue to the army in those days. The Corps retained it untill 1917. As the dog wore the cap soldiers became known as Pongo's.
