As Tab says its usually around 800/1200ft depending on how many aircraft, anyway jumping out isn,t the problem, its the landing.

I can recall an incident when the Ghurkhas were introduced to Parachuting back in the sixties. It was on a familiarisation flight on board a Beverley. The Ghurkhas were being flown in one and the PJI's were explaining to the wee blokes what height they were expected to jump from
and a puzzled looking Ghurkha Sgt said to the PJI can you not take the aeroplane down a bit lower, and the PJI asked why?the wee Sgt says that it was a wee bit high, the PJI then said to him that any lower and your parachute won't open in time, the wee Sgt whats a parachute. It had just donned the PJI that the Sgt had thought he was expected to jump without a parachute, and that is why he wanted to get down a bit lower to the ground.

They make me laugh do Ghurkas. Once on a jump and my friend got entangled with a Ghurka corporal, needless to say the drill where you make yourself as large a shape as possible to hopefully 'bounce' away from the parachute lines - went out of the window. My mate ,till this day, swears blind the Ghurka came in feet first screaming 'BANZAIII'.
Luckily they came down on one chute, no injuries, but you should have heard the abuse the small ,constantly grinning, Ghurka was getting - funny thing was I dont think he understood a word of it!
