Its name is BAYONET, after the name of the town in France. Try the internet for a map or an Atlas and look for a place with a name like bayonet.
Actually, you should look for the town called Bayonne. Originally, they were referred to as Bayonne bayonets. But a word of caution! The actual origin of the word is uncertain.
It sounds as if most of you have nothing useful to offer and are unable to answer the question.
For those of you that actually know what you're talking about and have experience with the SA-80 and M16(family), how do they compare?. I've read about the SA-80 and know there have been some problems (are they corrected?), first hand experience is interesting and useful.
The SA-80 is advertised as very accurrate, is this a referrence to the sighting system or is the weapon itself exceedingly accurate?
The M-16 is extremely accurate, but beyond 600 yards the energy is minimal. Shooting at a 1,000 yards, target bullets become unstable (+-950 yards). They have been known to bounce of a cloroplast target backing.
I was fortunate to have an M-16A2 and 8,000 rounds of ammunition on a bright sunny day. I decided to find out for myself how much punishment I could inflict on it:
a. Had to put on a glove around 700 rounds as the handguard became very hot.
b. Bolt carrier became sluggish around 1,000 rounds, squirt some CLP in the ejection port and keep shooting.
c. About 1,500 rounds it became difficult to strip off the top round of a full 30 round magazine. Pull the charging handle back and let it fall a couple of times til the top round chambers. Maybe thats why the teach us to load 18 rnds in a 20 rd. mag and 28 rds in a 30 rd. magazine, huh?
I gave up at 2,000 rds, the weapon was filthy and extremely hot (CLP was boiling off as it was squirted into the action). The weapon was still working though and quite useful.
This doesn't answer the SA-80 question, but it's the best I can do.
Thanks Tab, I didn't see yours before I sent my post.
The bottle opener would have been very welcome when I first learned that 'twist off' bottle caps were somewhat unique to the U.S., I was able to adapt though.
The question was about bayonets, although spelt in several new ways, not about the SA80, which has been covered exhaustively on numerous threads if Mikkel would figuratively get of his arse and use the search function.
Sisyphus,
I deliberately did not use the name Bayonne hoping Mikkel would, figuratively etc etc.
One of his posts was asking for casualties in the Boer War, I know we have some old sweats on the forum, BUT. Let the Pillock learn how to use a search engine before asking asinine questions.
What is the bayonet called?? I ask you is that the question of a sane man?? Well I call mine Robert, or Bob if I am feeling friendly!!!
Going back to the left handed thing i read, somewhere on this forum i belive but cant remember where, that there are left handed SA-80's but not very many.
Of course, this could be bollox!!!
