In the Army the exchange is done under Exercise Long Look (suitable name), the secondment is for 6 months, Aussies and Kiwis to us and the same numbers and ranks to them about 200 each way.

Mate of mine did the Exercise in '82, married an Aussie bird and transferred to the Australian Army all within a year, you could spot him half a mile away by the big smile on his face.

Another post missed by a sleeping Hackedoff
Ref chats elsewhere Rob, bin the little shit.

Ref Oaker5`s question, I did a first aid course on Monday Tuesday. One of my fellow students(you? a student? Fark off Harry :P ) was an ex-Israeli Para. What a top bloke. Certainly has an alternative view of Israeli opps in South Lebanon than our hero.
The Aussie SASR do not have the same breadth or depth of experiance as our own dear SAS. They don`t need to have. They do try, though. All of the SAS units came out of the desert experiences in WW11. Rhodesians, Kiwis, Aussies and South Africans were there from the start and went on to form their own versions of SAS. There have been five ex-Royals(to my knowledge) who have left the Corps and joined SASR( there has been at least one bloke who did it the other way round, eh, mate  bleeding whippets, get everywhere )
Try this link, but remember you are asking about information which is certainly restricted, if not classified.
www.defencejobs.gov.au
Good luck Oaker5
Sensible question, sensible answer.

I considered join the Australian Army back when I was joining up as its bloody easy to get into as a commonwealth citizen, beautiful women, good weather, decent beer and respectable pay. However A) You have to leave all you're life you've built there behind, (I found me a lady friend who didn't want to move for 36,000 aussie a year, plus that meant I had to take beautiful women off my list :x ) B) Did you know they have the most poisenous of every single animal in Australia. The most poisonous snakes, spiders, fish, and other floating things, and man do I hate spiders. :o Plus the Ozzers unfortunatly use the Steyr Aug, which is less than a respectable rifle.

If you're looking it up on the job search at the Aussie website that harry provided look for Rifleman, not infantry.

Mid786 has been removed from the forums.

Recently we have noticed an increase in problems caused by people with no experience, mouthing off about things they have no idea about. Consequently many members are becoming disgruntled, and agitated. The moderators have decided that in future, one warning, public and private will be issued; subsequent antagonistic posts will mean immediate removal from the forums. No appeals!
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

Good!!!

As for the poisonous animals your right, but you just don’t see them, my Nan and Granddad have lived in oz since before I was born and have hardly seen any snakes, a few spiders all of which were promptly squished.

The fact that the country is soooo vast reduces your chances of ever bumping into a nasty creature.

Am I right Harry???

Some very nasty creatures, indeed. However, more Australians die from anaphylactic shock after a bee sting, than from all the nasties put together. You have more chance of winning the pools than shark attacks and more people die, worldwide, from being hit on the head by falling coco nuts in any case.
If you do ever get to Oz, I`m the one you have to look out for 8)
Very venomous,

You could consider the NZ Army, they are of course the poor cousin and don’t have all the toys everyone else enjoys, but the worst savaging your likely to get here is from the Little Brown Kiwi (if you don’t include the local Maori Rugby team).

They’ll also teach you the Haka and send you on U.N. missions to some wonderful pacific islands.

Er, not quite. The fact that the country is soooo vast just means there’s more room for the bastards :o
Most parks in the city have warning signs ref the snakes and in the summer we saw several. Compost heaps are a bad idea, unless you’re a Tiger snake, they love to hibernate in them. In the garage of our last house, I lost count of the number of Red Back spiders I killed. At least ten over a six-month period. Our favourite beach has loads of Blue Ringed Octopi living in the rocks; each has enough venom to kill ten adults. These creatures are a fact of life down here, we don`t worry about them. We are aware and fore warned is fore armed. We know the first aid treatments and when we go bush, we go prepared. Some of the treatments are bizarre, though. Number one nasty is the Box Jellyfish, very often fatal, with extreme agonising pain. Survivors have rated the pain on a scale of one to ten, as being about seventeen :o 40 L of vinegar is needed to neutralise any tentacles left on the victim. In Queensland and the Northern Territory, they have vinegar stations every hundred yards on the popular beaches :P The pain from the venom of a Stonefish bite can be neutralised by placing the affected part in water as hot as you can stand, often takes several hours, though. Bit of a bastard if you`re miles from any where :P
For a very entertaining overview of the nasties down here, read Bill Bryson Down Under. Particularly the part about Box Jellies
No dramas mate, she`ll be right I reckon.
Aye, bush tucker Harry :D

my responding

Post by oskar5 »

Hello,

First of all, I would like to thank to all the good guys here who have responded to my message and especially to those who stand up for me against those who don't know what is tolerance and democracy.

War is a bad thing and I wish we haven't had it. I wish we could "close" the combat units - but unfortunately we can't afford it.

I admitt that even me, as an israeli citizen, criticize some of the actions of my army in which I took part but... we need, first of all, to understand that the coin has not one but two sides... and secondly, that the most important thing is to see how we can solve this conflict and not accuse each other, this is our imortant goal and a big challenge.

Now, I'll be happy to get some information concerning the subject that I have inquired in the begining.

Thanks.

I would like to get some information about the australian sas.
1. is it in the same level of the british sas?
2. do thay have missions when thay are not in war time?
3. does it have a really though training?
4. do thay exchange soldiers if one ask it?

5. the Israeli elite's units have fought everyday in the country for the last 50 years and before Israel had given back lebanon thay had fought there for 20 years as well (and in other countries that I can't tell). does the australian's sas which has less experience (or any other unit in the world) can reach to the same level of the Israeli special units?
6. what do you think about the israeli special forces in comprarison to other elite units?
7.our best units have a 1.8 months of trainings, how long does it take to train a soldier in the australian sas?

Since I consider to join the australian sas this information is really important for me.
I'll be thankfull for the one who can give me serious answers (especially to the second question).

thank you very much.
Oskar5,

Please allow me to assist with your questions:

1. Yes the SASR is on par with the British SAS and perform many similar roles. They also encompass the role of the SBS.

2. The SASR operates in accordence with Goverment Policy, and have conducted operations in many areas throughout the world, usually under some UN mandate, such Somalia, and Timor.

3. Training is very tough, therefore only the best get in. It's just not physical, but also mental.

4. Exchanges of troops occur between likeminded countries, with similar SF capabilities. Therefore you're likely to find 22, SBS, SEALs, and Green Berret SNCO's smooching around the SGT's Mess.

5. Quite frankly the Australian SASR would kick your Isreali SF troops clacker in just about every combat role you could devise. Water Op's, CQB, MOE, Recon, Long range patrols, freefall, beer drinking :P

6. Great job in Entebbe, not much heard of since.

7. Minimum 3 years in an Arms Corp (Infantry), Basic Selection Course -6 weeks, Patrol Course - 6 weeks, Para Course, 4 weeks, 1 year in the training Squadron, 1 year in War Roles squadron, CT training, 1 year in CT squadron.

P.s. Australian Citizens or permanent residence wishing to become citizens need only apply. Background checks will be carried out through all allied law enforcement agencies
