In that case "Brace up!" I'm a Mick. I knew it would come in handy one day.

Slainte, then. I'm probably descended from the bastard child of King George II and the Countess Darlington, who, it is said, was quite fat and ugly.

Wrong again! That's Hackedoff, who is short, fat and very ugly, but with an enormous penchant.............. That's it, just an enormous penchant. He is known in Liverpool as the Turd Viscount Hackedoff. 8)

Not generally to my face...
As for history, I'm getting ready to finish my last year as a bachelors candidate in history (late starter, ran away from home and joined the Navy my senior year of high school). My specialty is British colonial history, prior to that nasty little tiff in '76.

A wise man once said: "T'is the winners who write the "official" history."

OK, let's pick on the French for awhile.

A history question for y'all

Post by 1812USMarine »

Have any of you in the UK heard the term "leatherneck" used other than in reference to Marines? Our hysterical advisor (a civilian) swears this is a British term that is the same as our "redneck". Even though the USMC (and Army) wore the leather neck stocks up until the 1870s, he insists that that is not the origin of the term. Any clues?

 D'yer hear there,To the Sailors,Royal Marines are irreverently know as 'Bootnecks' or 'Leathernecks', the latter nickname deriving from the leather tongue they once wore at the junction of the collar of their tunics Hence the name 'Bootneck' or 'Leatherneck'.And the saying 'tell it to the Marines' is by no means a sneer at their gullibility. It implies that if the Royal Marines, who have served their country in every part of the world, will believe a story then it must be true.Per Mare Per Terram And Semper fi.Aye JR

Same as what official USMC history says, but you can't argue with some people. Thanks!

The Huntley

Post by Dolly Gray »

JD

What do you know about the Huntley. I saw the movie that Bollywood made about her, then heard that they were going to try and raise her from the deep six that she took. What they did say that most of the artefacts that would be in it would be in a good condition due to the amout sludge that she took a dive into. Did they succeed

Ref the Huntley. There was a 1 hour programme just recently on one of the documentary channels on sky about the raising of it. Quite good so it was. It'll more than likely be on again in the next few weeks. I know there is no way you'd get me in a mobile coffin like that.
