No doubt JR will be able to educate us on this matter Middy. I have a rough idea of the answer, but am not sure. I know that Canadian officers receive a long service medal and all Canadian recipients of this medal are entitled to put CD after their name. I suppose us ex RN/RM types would find it amusing having the letters RNLSGC behind our names.

Like Andy I am not to sure,but I think knowing the MOD it would be taken for granted that all Officers (being Gentlemen) would have no need to be awarded the LSGC medal, Officers who came up through the ranks and had been awarded the LSGC would of course be allowed to wear the medal,Its very interesting Middy,and well worth looking into never gave it a thought before having never reached the dizzy heights.Aye JR

i think that JR is on the right track. One would have to go back in history to obtain an accurate answer. The more badges of service a soldier earned, the more he was revered and respected by his peers. The award of a medal would have been the ultimate of service. Officers, being gentlemen, would not be expected to shut their career short, as it was a career for them, but not necessarily a career for the men.
The award of the RNLSGC medal indicates 15 years of undetected crime.

Ok here I am again on this one. In the U.S. the medals and ribbons and the way they are given out depends on the branch of service. The Army does issue 1 ribbon for graduating boot camp. the AF does too. The navy has ribbons for rifle marksmanship. And the Marines...Nothing. A badge for marksmanship declaring what qual you are. marksman, sharpshooter, expert. Thats it.
I got a question. Do you guys really have bars on board your ships? Or is that a myth????

US Marine Hi,Regarding Bars onboard ships of the royal Navy,The Officers Have the Wardroom Bar,Senior Rate's and Senior NCOs have their own mess (in the case of RM SNCOs Its called the Horse box) as the tradition of the rum issue was sadly done away with cans of beer are now an issue to the lower ranks and ratings,but woe betide anyone who gets drunk,but being a crafty person latch on to the abstainers?,Maybe Andy can enlighten you on the beer and spirits consumed in the seniors Mess.Aye JR

Sadly, the U.S. warships do not allow us to drink. UNLESS, you have been at sea for 45 days without pulling into a port. Then and only then each man is allowed 2 cans of beer. This is only one day mind you not 2 cans a day.

Royal Fleet Auxilliaries have bars on board for their civvy crews, these are available for use by Junior Rates. My brat reckons it's her favourite posting, much more comfy than a carrier, better food and she can buy her favourite drinks.

Regarding Longservice / TD medals in the TA. I joined as a trooper and when I was commissioned told that only half of my service in the 'ranks' counted towards a TD and as an officer could not recieve a LS?GC medal. If I had checked before I left I would have done another two months and got a TD.

US Marine is correct in his statement that it depends on the branch of service as to how many medals/ribbons one receives. The USAF leads the way, by far. A group of us VietVets went to an air show at Vandenberg AFB once and ran across an E-3 with 3.5 rows of ribbons! This kid had a little over 2 years service but had more fruit salad than one of our USMC vets with two combat tours. The airman had never even left the States!
Also, the Navy issues
full-size medals for rifle/pistol marksmanship. They figure that any swabby what knows which end of a weapon is which deserves a medal. (Yes, I have the pistol one.)

that must be a nightmare. do they give you those tiny ones that you see on the TV that are only half a pint. i know the US military have a history/mythology of testing things on there soldiers but thats just evil. the bastards
