In the navy there are only a few ratings that retain the rate of Seaman (varients of). Anyone that joined up as of 1994 would have been rated according to their trade ie I was an Operator Maintainer Sensors Submarines 1st Class, although this was the same as being an Able Seaman. If addressed by a senior rank or rate it was as OM Jones or Operator Maintainer Jones or possibly scroat depending on what I'd done.
